Funds raised will benefit foster children by reuniting siblings living apart in foster care, supporting foster youth in reaching their educational and career goals, providing birthday gifts, school clothes and opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, and providing an emergency shelter where children feel safe and cared for. Promises2Kids helps foster children overcome the difficulties of their past and grow to become healthy and successful adults. Author Steve Yagyagan kicks off AAPI Heritage Month with his book, "Heather: Tu’u Maia Lou Lima" (Give Me Your Hand). He will share his family’s AAPI heritage as an author, a son of parents from two AAPI backgrounds and as a father. Parking must be arranged through Dr. Judy Patacsil’s office.

JJ Cale, who died in 2013, wrote hit songs for Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tom Petty. In a 2009 interview Cale discusses his passion for music, not the spotlight. Plus songwriter Al Howard and his mother discuss their ambitious 100 song project that includes a painting for each song.

April 20 through Aug. 31, 2023 Created in collaboration with the MIDI Association, "MIDI@40" celebrates the possibilities enabled by MIDI in the 40 years since its public introduction. Through a collection of stories and media from manufacturers, musicians, and engineers, visitors will learn about the ways MIDI has impacted music. The exhibition provides a brief history of MIDI along with a look to its future and an overview of its functionality. Finally, an interactive area with MIDI-enabled instruments and other devices will give visitors a glimpse at what MIDI has made possible. Teen-Versionary is Diversionary Theatre's intensive, collaborative LGBTQ+ and allied youth theater program, involving a three-week rehearsal schedule and performances. This summer's production, part of San Diego Pride, is about the idea of being seen as "puppets of the system." The play will combine puppet-style movements, poetry, music, art and dance, and will be performed by the group of nine teens and is directed by Wildred Paloma. A federal appeals court struck down a state law prohibiting the sale of semi-automatic rifles to people under the age of 21. The law passed shortly after the 2019 Poway Synagogue shooting. Then, a national baby formula shortage is a serious issue for some San Diego families. And, two more journalists were killed in Mexico this week bringing the total deaths to 11 this year. The murders are rarely solved and investigations often lack transparency. Next, May is mental health awareness month. UC San Diego professor emeritus Andrew Scull has a new book coming out on the subject. He says the U.S. has largely failed in treating mental illness throughout its history, calling it “a riddle we must continue to strive to solve.” Finally, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will celebrate the life of its late founder Victor Laruccia with a screening of the Italian film “Loose Cannons” at the Museum of Photographic Arts on Friday.

Echoes of Africa celebrates classical and contemporary artistic traditions by African and African American artists. This two-part exhibition features African artifacts from San Diego Mesa College's World Cultures Art collection coupled with artworks produced by local contemporary artists. A dynamic group of artifacts will be exhibited, featuring objects that demonstrate the mastery of African artisans in metal, wood, ceramics, beadwork, and textiles. The Fine Arts gallery will highlight artworks by contemporary local artists in conversation with select African artifacts, echoing and responding to aspects of their materials, symbolism, and creative process. The exhibition pays tribute to the ongoing cultural and artistic influence of African art on African American artists and celebrates our connections to the spirit and history of African and African American culture. Curated by Dr. Denise Rogers and features work by Andrea Chung, Angie Jennings, Christopher Lloyd Tucker, Maxx Moses, and Jermaine Adeshola Williams.
