The Athenaeum Art Center and Bread & Salt co-present a special concert at 1955 Julian Avenue in Logan Heights, on Saturday, August 17. A longtime friend of the Athenaeum jazz program, the Brazilian vocalist, composer, pianist, and percussionist Claudia Villela is joined by Romero Lubambo on guitar for a program celebrating her latest CD release, Cartas ao Vento, a collection of original compositions that was listed as one of DownBeat’s Best Albums in 2023. Villela sings mostly in Portuguese, interpreting lyrics with keen emotional insight and supple rhythmic command. DownBeat noted her “unwavering commitment to the highest level of improvisation,” adding: “All discussions about Villela’s singing and songwriting necessarily start with a nod to the dizzying scope and depth of her improvisatory skill. In one tune, she’ll run through several registers, shift vocal qualities, allude to familiar riffs and keep unswerving time. Oh, and improvise a full set of lyrics in Portuguese. It must be said, hardly anybody can do this.” The New York Times celebrated her “remarkable, beautiful, towering voice,” and banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck commented, “She is pure music!” Lubambo is known to Athenaeum audiences for performances with Chico Pinheiro, Luciana Souza, and Trio Da Paz. He has performed and recorded with many of the outstanding artists of our time, from Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, and Gal Costa to Yo-Yo Ma, Kathleen Battle, and Billie Eilish. Jazziz wrote, “Guitarist Romero Lubambo may be the best practitioner of his craft in the world today ... Zo is 34 years old and has been a performing guitarist for 12 years. He has been teaching people how to play and understand the guitar/piano for four years. Born in London, he was raised in North County, San Diego, where he currently resides. He is a graduate of CSULB with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, and during his time there he studied Blues, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, and Irish Folk Music. While at CSULB he joined an Irish Folk Band, and started his own Blues band along with vocalist Christina Wilson. He’s studied under many influential guitarists across the country. In Los Angeles, Ron Eschete and Mike Higgins. In New York, Peter Mazza, Gilad Hekselman, and Michael Valeanu. Finally, in San Diego he studied with Bob Boss, Lorraine Castellanos, Fred Kunze. These experiences have prepared him for large ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, and solo guitar performances in a variety of styles. Hundreds of flight delays and cancellations at Newark's airport over the past several days are giving passengers headaches and spurring promises to improve the nation's air traffic control system.

The popular Sundown Sunday concert series at Civita kicks off on June 9 with a free concert by the 1980s dance band BetaMaxx. The ultra-high-energy Betamaxx delivers a non-stop, nostalgia-filled rock concert that keeps the dance floor packed with tunes from Michael Jackson, Madonna, New Wave of New Order, Bon Jovi, Depeche Mode and more. Guests are invited to bring blankets, beach chairs and picnics. Take-out meals are available across the street at Poki Bowl and El Tianguis or from a selection of food trucks.
