This evening features the talents of Emily Afton, Julianna Zachariou, and Veronica May, hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Emily Afton is a queer multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and performer with roots across California, including Oakland, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Her nostalgia-infused alt-pop, influenced by artists like Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, and Robyn, has been praised by NPR as "wonderful, wonderful electro-pop that’s weary of life but positive." Emily's music has captivated audiences, including a 40,000-strong crowd at the San Francisco Women's March. Her music, including her popular song ‘Lost,’ has been featured on TV shows like Riverdale and Batwoman, and she has toured with Third Eye Blind. Emily is currently releasing new singles from her upcoming second full-length album, with the latest, 'Running out of Time,' accompanied by a striking music video exploring themes of heartbreak and self-preservation. Julianna Zachariou is a San Diego-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose unique blend of pop, folk, rock, indie and Americana has garnered over 8 million streams online. Aside from her solo project, she also contributes to the band Echobaby with friend, bandmate, and co-writer Josh Flowers. On the heels of her latest SDMA-nominated album "Hero of Your Heart," Julianna is currently raising funds for her next collection of work. Veronica May is a vibrant and multi-talented musician known for her electric guitar riffs and unique acoustic sounds. Living with Bipolar 1, she uses her music to break down stigmas around mental health. Her album "Awakened" is a testament to her versatility, blending the influences of artists like Alabama Shakes and James Taylor with her own powerful voice. Collaborating with talents like Jason Mraz, Veronica's mission is to inspire and uplift, offering hope and understanding through her music to those who feel unheard.   • Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. About JP Balmat Jean-Paul (JP) Balmat is the award-winning educator and performer leading the internationally recognized music program at Mission Bay. His award-winning groups have been invited to perform throughout California, New Orleans and most recently Japan. Jean-Paul is an accomplished educator, performer, composer and arranger. As a professional saxophonist, he performs regularly in San Diego. He is artistic director of the Euphoria Brass Band and his recordings and compositions have been nominated for San Diego Music Awards the past six years. In 2019 and 2020 Euphoria Brass Band won the San Diego Music Award for “Best Jazz.” Most recently he has performed with New Orleans trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith (Tonight Show Band) and GRAMMY award winning and nominated musicians Oscar Hernandez, Francisco Torres (Poncho Sanchez, Gordon Goodwin) and Javier Cabanillas (Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Cabanijazz Project). Through his career he has had the honor of opening for Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Cowboy Mouth, Rebirth Brass Band, Funky Meters, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Honey Island Swamp Band, Rosie Ledet, California Honeydrops, Red Baraat, Chali 2na, and Rusted Root, among others.
