Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. The “Pleasure of Your Company” music series will welcome clarinetist Vladimir Goltsman and pianist Dmitry Kirichenko on Sunday, May 19, at 2:30 p.m. at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. Join us for a delightful afternoon of music for clarinet and piano including works from the Baroque through Romantic eras and beyond. A native of Russia, Vladimir Goltsman was trained at the Gnessin Music Institute of Moscow, where he studied with with the renowned Maestro, Professor Ivan Mozgovenko. He was a soloist for the Theater of Experimental Music in Moscow and a member of the Soloist Ensemble of “Moscow Sinfonieta.” He performed as soloist and principal clarinet of the Orquestra de Baja California, Mexico and with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. A versatile musician, he has also played with the Wayne Foster Music and Entertainment orchestra/band and served on the faculty of The Bishop’s School, where he mentored the school orchestra and jazz band. Well loved by Scripps Ranch audiences, Dmitry Kirichenko is a graduate of the Moscow and Odessa Conservatories. He has performed throughout western and eastern Europe and the San Diego area. His playing, described by Paris music critic Claude Taelman as “warm sensitivity heightened by his delicate touch and great technical mastery,” is a perfect match for the Library’s fine Schimmel piano. There is no charge for the concert, which is sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library, although donations are appreciated. Masks are recommended but not required at this time. Miramar Ranch Library Center is located at 10301 Scripps Lake Drive. It should be noted that due to a parking lot expansion project, onsite parking is currently somewhat limited. The dream began when local youth councils planned to organize a conference specifically for Southern California Native youth. After several planning meetings, the youth voted on a conference name and agreed to host the first ever Southern California Native Youth Conference on the Soboba Indian Reservation at Noli Indian High School and the Recreation Center. The success of this conference marked the beginning of the Dream the Impossible Youth Conference becoming an annual event. Known world wide as The Queen of Boogie Woogie, The Sultana of Swing, and The Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, has had a day named after her by the city of San Diego in 2008, and has won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. She has recorded over 12 albums under her own name, securing an international award from The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis for Best Self Produced Album (Sophisticated Ladies). She was the beehive wearing music director and longtime pianist for blues diva Candye Kane, through the 90s, appearing on many of her albums, touring world wide (France, Germany, England, The Czech Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, and more) as well as all over the US and parts of Canada. Sue has also toured Switzerland, Russia, The Netherlands, and Argentina under her own name. She had a radio show for 3 years on San Diego's local Jazz station KSDS 88.3FM, and now hosts a podcast called "The Motel Swing Happy Hour KSUE San Diego." Selections will include an impressive song written the romantic style by Rossano Galante, music from the motion picture Saving Private Ryan by film composer John Williams, and a piece composed in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School by Frank Ticheli, plus many more.
