Known world wide as The Queen of Boogie Woogie, The Sultana of Swing, and The Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, has had a day named after her by the city of San Diego in 2008, and has won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. She has recorded over 12 albums under her own name, securing an international award from The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis for Best Self Produced Album ("Sophisticated Ladies"). She was the beehive wearing music director and longtime pianist for blues diva Candye Kane, through the 90s, appearing on many of her albums, touring world wide (France, Germany, England, The Czech Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, and more) as well as all over the US and parts of Canada. Sue has also toured Switzerland, Russia, The Netherlands, and Argentina under her own name. She had a radio show for 3 years on San Diego's local Jazz station KSDS 88.3FM, and now hosts a podcast called "The Motel Swing Happy Hour KSUE San Diego." Zo is 34 years old and has been a performing guitarist for 12 years. He has been teaching people how to play and understand the guitar/piano for four years. Born in London, he was raised in North County, San Diego, where he currently resides. He is a graduate of CSULB with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, and during his time there he studied Blues, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, and Irish Folk Music. While at CSULB he joined an Irish Folk Band, and started his own Blues band along with vocalist Christina Wilson. He’s studied under many influential guitarists across the country. In Los Angeles, Ron Eschete and Mike Higgins. In New York, Peter Mazza, Gilad Hekselman, and Michael Valeanu. Finally, in San Diego he studied with Bob Boss, Lorraine Castellanos, Fred Kunze. These experiences have prepared him for large ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, and solo guitar performances in a variety of styles. About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly thereafter, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego.
