Join Mission Wildlife for an incredible evening with Save the Elephants at the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) on May 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the San Diego premiere screening of “A Life Among Elephants.” This inspiring and powerful documentary combines dramatic wildlife footage with the story of the remarkable life of Iain Douglas-Hamilton - a contemporary of Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. During the 1970s, Douglas-Hamilton conducted pioneering research into elephant behavior and movement and through his work was the first to alert the world to the ivory poaching crisis, bringing about the first global ivory trade ban in 1989. The film follows Iain's life through the present. Traveling from Kenya to be at the screening in person will be champions from Save the Elephants, who have committed their lives to preserving these majestic creatures. A Q&A will follow the screening. Join us at ArtReach HQ for a Still Life Drawing Workshop! Build or hone your drawing skills with simple yet effective drawing techniques through the still-life process! Still-life drawing involves drawing stationary objects arranged in an interesting composition. In this workshop, learn how to use different drawing mediums, such as charcoal and graphite, elements such as line, shape, and value, and fun drawing techniques that train your eyes for life drawing! Teens ages 11+ can create a small rug from scratch! Rugs have a deep history as textile art and as objects that create specific spaces. Using handheld tufting machines, participants can create and design their rugs using colorful yarn. This is a two-part class! In this first session, learn how to create and translate a design for the medium, learn the basics of tufting, and begin filling in your designs. Jean Guerrero is a former KPBS reporter with extensive experience covering Latin America. Her KPBS reporting focused on family separations at the border, Trump's wall, deportations, and migrant caravan. Her work was recognized by the San Diego Press Club, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Pacific Southwest Chapter, and the Society for Professional Journalists, including "Best Body Of Work" in 2018.

She started her career at the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires in Mexico City as a foreign correspondent. She won the PEN/FUSION Emerging Writers Prize in 2016. Her book "Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir" was published in 2018 by One World (Random House).

Jean holds a B.A. in journalism and a minor in neuroscience from the University of Southern California. She also has an MFA degree in creative nonfiction from Goucher College.
