  • The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) California will host a Congressional Candidate Forum for California’s 48th District, bringing together candidates to discuss issues impacting women entrepreneurs and the small business community.   • McAlister Institute will host its 9th Annual Miracles of Recovery Luncheon on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Coasterra on Harbor Island. This inspiring event brings together supporters, community leaders, and individuals in recovery to celebrate healing and expand access to life-changing treatment services. Hosted by NBC 7 News Anchor Omari Fleming, the luncheon will feature a keynote address from a special guest speaker, remarks from the Miracles of Recovery Awardee, and powerful personal stories that highlight the resilience of those on the path to recovery. Designed as an intimate and meaningful gathering, the luncheon offers attendees a direct connection to McAlister Institute’s mission and impact across San Diego County. This year also marks a period of exciting growth for the organization, including the introduction of Incidental Medical Services at its Lemon Grove Campus—home to adult detoxification and residential programs such as the Kiva Women & Children’s Learning Center—as well as a major rebrand and plans for a new campus to expand access to care. The Miracles of Recovery Luncheon highlights the transformative journeys of individuals and families affected by substance use, demonstrating how recovery can restore relationships and strengthen communities. Proceeds from the event support McAlister Institute’s comprehensive prevention, treatment, and long-term recovery programs. Becoming a Florist is a rotating workshop series built around the wide range of floral designs professional florists create for weddings, events, retail, and everyday work. Each month focuses on a different core floral form, giving students the opportunity to gain real-world design experience across styles, scales, and applications. You’ll learn professional florist approaches to mechanics, structure, flower care, and design decision-making, along with practical considerations like handling, transport, and longevity. This series is designed to support both arranging hobbyists and working florists looking to expand their technical skills and confidence. This Month’s Focus: Flower Crowns In this workshop, we’ll focus on designing a collection of wearable floral pieces, including a corsage, boutonnière, pocket boutonnière, and hair comb. Instruction will cover the specific mechanics, proportions, and techniques used for each format, along with guidance on flower selection and construction suited to movement, wearability, and longevity.   • Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) will host the “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY Family & Friends Festival" on Saturday, May 2, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Liberty Station Central Promenade (2641 Truxtun Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month, the free, community-centered event will bring together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and young people looking for a path to success for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and collaboration. Moving beyond a traditional resource fair, the festival is designed as an immersive experience that strengthens connections across people and services. It focuses on building a more coordinated and accessible support system for transition-age foster youth and other underserved populations. The event will bring together hundreds of young people seeking pathways to stability, alongside community leaders, families, and friends working to build meaningful relationships and advance a more connected, solutions-based model of support. Attendees from the broader community will also have the opportunity to connect with organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn how to get involved in supporting local youth. The event will feature approximately 40 participating organizations offering resources across a wide range of services, including housing, education, job training, mental health support, financial literacy, and health services. Participating organizations will engage directly with attendees, showcase their impact, and connect with other peer organizations to identify gaps they can address together, helping to build stronger, more collaborative partnerships. Attendees can expect a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment, interactive experiences, and local food. The event will feature a performance by San Diego-based artist Divina Jasso, along with entertainment from magician The Amazing Dana. Guests can also participate in yoga sessions, enjoy an open-air glam booth, and hear directly from two JIT youth speakers sharing their personal stories. A lineup of local food trucks, including Dirty Birds, Born in Brooklyn, Dilly’s Ice Cream, and Juicy Shawarma, will be on-site throughout the event.   • We’re currently hosting a Military Push-Up Challenge for active-duty service members and veterans, where the participant with the most push-ups will win a free 2 carat diamond engagement ring. The contest runs from March 20 through April 18 in celebration of National Exercise Day. Each participant is given one attempt to complete as many push-ups as possible. Proper form is required throughout, and competitors cannot pause for more than three seconds at any time. Each spring, families, students, schools, and partners come together to lower barriers and open doors to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers. Chaired by the Fleet Science Center, the San Ysidro STEM Committee is proud to mark the 5th anniversary of this free, equity-centered, family fair. An event built with the community, for the community.
