Dark Christmas provides a novel approach to holiday festivities by echoing the ages old traditions of mid-European folklore and celebration of winter. It consists of a holiday market that showcases unique and offbeat vendors in downtown Vista and features a Krampus Run. The Backfence Society, Twisted Heart Puppetworks and the Vista Art Foundation collaborate to create this market inspired by the European Kristkindl Markets of old Europe, offering a decidedly different twist on the typical Christmas events. The winter series opens on Sunday, January 26, with the return of celebrated Venezuelan pianist-composer-arranger Edward Simon, joined by his longtime trio members bassist Reuben Rogers (also known for his work with Charles Lloyd) and drummer Adam Cruz (also known for his work with Danilo Pérez). Simon’s last Athenaeum performance as a leader was with his project Femeninas: Songs of Latin American Women, which featured vocalist Magos Herrera. He returns to the library to celebrate the release of a new trio album, Latin American Songbook, vol. 2, which has a special focus on the Afro-Caribbean musical traditions of his native Venezuela. Simon is well known to Athenaeum audiences from his high-energy performance last summer with guitarist-vocalist Camila Meza and past appearances with the SFJAZZ Collective and the Steel House trio with Scott Colley and Brian Blade. Learn to needle felt! Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Have you ever wished you’d stumble upon a tiny fairy house while walking in a deep forest? Join felting artist Sophie Ancel in this 3-hour workshop where you’ll learn to make your own little house using needle felting techniques. Students will use natural wool roving and batting, felt, beads and simple embroidery. The class requires the use of sharp felting needles and we will cover how to safely use felting needles. Guards will also be provided. Each student will have the option of creating a tiny home equipped with a door, window, and decorated with flowers and leaves. This little home can be used as a box as the roof can act as a lid! You will be given a tiny light for added fairy house magic. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome. One rainy night, siblings Sam and Kris are completely consumed by their devices as their father sets up a pillow fort and invites them to play Lotería. His invitation is met with a resounding “NO.” When the internet goes out, Sam and Kris are outraged. Where is their Dad to fix it?! The kids soon discover that the pillow fort is a magical portal to the world of Lotería and their father is trapped inside the game. Sam and Kris set out to bring him back, but Lotería will not let him go so easily.
