This free, family-friendly event is a festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring Aztec dance performances by Danza Azteca Kuauhkoalt, live music performances by Zhiely Monraz and guitarist Ricardo Arredondo, a puppet play by Gastón Morineau and Veronica Burgess, and our new CoLAB play written by Crystal Mercado and members of our community partners at Casa Familiar, directed by our very own Valeria Vega. We will also have a puppet parade and drum workshop led by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Drummers Without Borders, and the talented visual artist Natalie Gonzalez presenting her original art piece titled “Ojos de Dios” (Huichol “God’s Eyes”), will also lead a workshop for audience members to create their own piece to take home. Six of San Diego’s most talented AAPI chefs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islander) will create signature baked goods for the Friendly Feast AAPI Chefs Bake Sale, taking place at Cowboy Star on Sunday, November 17. Guests can pre-order a curated box with six unique items, including an ube coconut crumb doughnut, Valrhona chocolate cannelé, “Flandan tart”, and more. Boxes are priced at $45 each. Proceeds benefit the Friendly Feast scholarship fund and Pacific Arts Movement. Bake sale boxes go on sale Thursday, November 7th via the Friendly Feast website. Boxes must be purchased in advance for pick up at Cowboy Star on Sunday, November 17. Limited quantities available! We expect this event to sell out early. The Maritime Museum of San Diego is proud to announce the International Guild of Knot Tyers North American Chapter will bring the Art and Craft of Knot Tying to visitors and members of the Maritime Museum of San Diego one day only Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. A Registered Educational Charity, the International Guild of Knot Tyers was founded, with twenty-five members, in April 1982, as an association of folks with interests in knots and knotting techniques of all kinds. In succeeding years, the Guild has grown beyond all expectations and now has over one thousand members worldwide. According to Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, “We are excited to share with our community the enormous talent of this special group of artisans enthusiastic about their knot-related work and eager to teach visitors the art of ropemaking and knot tying.” The purpose of IGKT NA is to promote the art, craft, and science of knotting, its study and practice, and to facilitate communications among all North American members and between the IGKT-NA and IGKT. Based on Helen Thorpe's bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver - two of who are documented and two who are not - through young adulthood. Their close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates the girls' opportunities, or lack thereof. When a political firestorm arises, each girl's future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult yet essential questions about what makes us American. "Just Like Us" is directed by Grossmont College Theatre Arts faculty member Walter Allen Bennett. This production will run November 21-23 & December 5-7, 2024.
