The Maritime Museum of San Diego is proud to announce the International Guild of Knot Tyers North American Chapter will bring the Art and Craft of Knot Tying to visitors and members of the Maritime Museum of San Diego one day only Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. A Registered Educational Charity, the International Guild of Knot Tyers was founded, with twenty-five members, in April 1982, as an association of folks with interests in knots and knotting techniques of all kinds. In succeeding years, the Guild has grown beyond all expectations and now has over one thousand members worldwide. According to Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, “We are excited to share with our community the enormous talent of this special group of artisans enthusiastic about their knot-related work and eager to teach visitors the art of ropemaking and knot tying.” The purpose of IGKT NA is to promote the art, craft, and science of knotting, its study and practice, and to facilitate communications among all North American members and between the IGKT-NA and IGKT. For one day only, Maritime Museum of San Diego visitors and members can view IGKT NA members’ work, meet the artisans, learn the art of ropemaking, witness knot tying demonstrations and more. Sandra Cisneros will join Dean Nelson for an interview as part of the 2025 Writer's Symposium by the Sea, Writing That Redeems Sandra Cisneros is a Latina American short-story writer and poet regarded as a key figure in Chicano literature. Cisneros is best known for her first novel, "The House on Mango Street," and her subsequent short story collection, "Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories." Her most recent books are "Martita, I Remember You: A Story in English and Spanish" and "Mujer sin vergüenza." Cisneros is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, the USA Literary Award, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and more. She established the Macondo Writers Workshop, which provides socially conscious workshops for writers, and she founded the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation, which awards talented writers connected to Texas. "Ostentatious Oasis" – A New Exhibition by Dave Kinsey Confronts Humanity’s Delusions of Permanence. Oolong Gallery is pleased to present Ostentatious Oasis, a solo exhibition by San Diego based painter Dave Kinsey, opening March 15th and running through April 15th. In his first solo exhibition in four years, this body of work—a continuation of Kinsey’s ongoing Existential Synthesis series—confronts humanity’s precarious relationship with nature and the self-imposed isolation that blinds us to its realities. For this exhibition, Kinsey employs disjointed marble figures as metaphors for human arrogance— symbolizing illusions of purity and permanence that fracture under the weight of our own actions. White marble, historically tied to wealth and power, becomes a symbol of hubris, crumbling in contrast to the consequences of human advancement: wars that displace, disasters that devastate, and relentless exploitation that erodes the natural world. How do we as humans coexist or even adapt within these uncanny and divergent spaces? What will become of our modern way of living that seems at odds with the natural rhythm of our planet?" the artist asks. Set within surreal, urbane environments, the figures reflect humanity’s disconnection from nature, insulated within artificial comforts that distort our perception of reality. Through deep earth tones and fluid, dreamlike compositions, Kinsey invites viewers to confront these fragile constructs and reimagine humanity’s role—not as masters of the Earth, but as beings inextricably bound to it. Influenced by a pivotal trip to Florence in 2022, Kinsey draws upon the grandeur of Renaissance sculpture while subverting its ideals through a surrealist lens. This synthesis of historical reverence and contemporary existential inquiry defines Ostentatious Oasis, bridging past and present in an urgent reflection on civilization’s fragility. A festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring live music performances, a new coLAB play in collaboration with our community of Casa Familiar, arts and crafts for kids, a puppet show, workshops, and more. Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. This free, family-friendly event is a festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring Aztec dance performances by Danza Azteca Kuauhkoalt, live music performances by Zhiely Monraz and guitarist Ricardo Arredondo, a puppet play by Gastón Morineau and Veronica Burgess, and our new CoLAB play written by Crystal Mercado and members of our community partners at Casa Familiar, directed by our very own Valeria Vega. We will also have a puppet parade and drum workshop led by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Drummers Without Borders, and the talented visual artist Natalie Gonzalez presenting her original art piece titled “Ojos de Dios” (Huichol “God’s Eyes”), will also lead a workshop for audience members to create their own piece to take home.
