  • Plaza Paseo Real invites the community to celebrate the holiday season with a series of exciting events for families and friends. Visitors can enjoy live holiday performances by the award-winning Holiday Carolers, who will bring festive harmonies to the center on Sunday, December 1 and Sunday, December 8 from Noon to 2 p.m. These professional singers, known for their backgrounds in LA Opera, theater and television, will charm guests with traditional, contemporary and jazzy carols near La Costa Coffee Roasting. The festivities continue on Sunday, December 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Plaza Paseo Real’s Holiday Spectacular. Santa Claus himself will be available for photos in the courtyard, where families can also enjoy holiday crafts, face painting, balloon art and more. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras to capture special moments with Santa. Come see the refurbished upper level at the center while celebrating the holiday season! Additionally, from December 5 through December 19, The Search for Santa’s Helpers invites visitors on a scavenger hunt to find Santa’s mischievous elves hidden throughout the center. Each elf will have a QR code that participants can scan for a chance to win prizes. Clues will be shared on Plaza Paseo Real’s social media (@plazapaseoreal) to help guests locate these holiday characters. No RSVP required. Events are free and open to the public. This unforgettable evening will transport the audience through a collection of timeless songs from these legendary artists, each performance evoking deep memories and emotions. With a 14-piece Mariachi accompanied by a 10-piece symphony orchestra, the show promises to be an emotional celebration of Mexico's musical heritage. Mariachi Champaña Nevin, who has been performing together internationally for the past five years, will bring the sounds of Mexico to life in a unique and breathtaking way. This will be the group's first performance in San Diego this year.   • November 23, from 9:30 a.m. - Noon It’s time to get into the Winter spirit by creating Glass Nightlights or Ornaments for yourself or a special someone on your gift list. Join Instructor Suzanne Balestri on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to make holiday ornaments such as snowmen, penguins, Judaica, candles, wreaths, Christmas trees, elves, etc. Keep the season’s inspiration going, and design a nightlight to add a soft seasonal glow to any room. (Nightlight mechanism will be provided.) You’ll have a wide selection of glass colors, textures and patterns to create one-of-a-kind winter treasures. No previous glass experience needed. Suzanne will help you along the way, and will send you instructional glass cutting and grinding videos in advance of the workshop so you can become familiar with several techniques before class. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Collective a few days later. A $15 (cash only) materials fee is due to the instructor at the start of the class.   • Friday, November 1, 2024 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Jared Padilla-Elliott (assemblage) PEEC for TEENS (13–18 years old) PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. The program is free and teens can register by clicking the “REGISTER” button below. Western art has never experienced such magnificent examinations of what it is to be human. Rembrandt’s portraits present compelling, sentient beings, who think … feel … remember. In these lectures, we always speak of the role of art within its given society, but with Rembrandt’s evocations of a human’s inner life and of the tragedy of life, art becomes universal, transcending boundaries and borders, time and place. About Linda Blair: Linda Blair has taught art history for many years, at the La Jolla Athenaeum and UC San Diego Osher; she was a docent at The Cloisters. She holds a BA from Mills College and an MA from USD. She is an active volunteer at UC San Diego, dedicated to raising scholarship funds.
