The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024. Peter Bolland is professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College. He is the author of The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom. In this talk, he will discuss the search for wisdom as humanity’s oldest quest. What is wisdom? And how is it different from knowledge? Is wisdom a body of information, or a way of being in the world? Is it universal or culturally specific? Why do so many wisdom traditions agree that wisdom is ineffable, that is, exists beyond language and concepts? Philosophy, the academic discipline generally tasked with this inquiry, is rife with conflicting perspectives on these most pressing questions. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium. You may leave your work at your station for the entire workshop. Materials: The material fee includes three small wood-panel supports, 8” x 8”; R & F encaustic medium; some R & F wax colors; R & F wax colors sticks; heated palette; some brushes; heat guns; some collage materials; some paints; images; things to embed; mark-making tools; oil pastels; collage materials; transfer materials; paints; gloves; scissors. Formidable improviser and titular organist of the famous Dom Bedos organ at St Croix in Bordeaux, Paul Goussot will present a recital of music for organ by J.S. Bach and G.F Handel including several improvisations. This concert is part of the Ricercar Consort residency. A versatile musician, Paul Goussot has always tried to diversify his job as an artist by specializing at once in the organ, the harpsichord, and improvisation. He teaches continuo and improvisation at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Geneva in Switzerland and teaches the organ at the Rueil-Malmaison Conservatory. Prize winner of the international competitions of Bruges and St-Maurice d’Agaune, Paul Goussot successively won first prize for improvisation at the international competition in Luxembourg, first prize for improvisation at the 26th international organ competition in St-Albans and, in 2012, first prize and the prize of the public at the 49th international improvisation competition in Haarlem. He has been invited to prestigious European festivals: Musique sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris, Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron, Bach Orgel festival Leipzig, Musik-fest Bremen, St-Albans organ festival, Ancona, Haarlem, Lausanne. He played many concerts with Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort, which resulted in recordings for the Label Mirare. His last CD recorded for the Label ROB on the Dom Bedos organ in Ste-Croix of Bordeaux received the Choc Classica award.
