Embrace the supernatural with an unforgettable weekend as we bring the legendary La Pocha Nostra back to San Diego! Join us for a screening of four of Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s groundbreaking films on Sunday, October 20 at The Front Arte Cultura Gallery, offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of his cinematic work. "Son of Border Crisis" (1990), directed by Isaac Artenstein, tackles the cultural clashes and immigrant struggles faced by Mexican-Americans. "SF Apocalypse" (2022), is a post-pandemic experimental performance film set in a dystopian art space on the periphery of San Francisco. Shot by filmmaker Gustavo Vazquez, the film features a cast of 25 artists who join Gómez-Peña in creating a visionary commentary on the collapse of creative spaces in a post-pandemic world. "Oaxacalifornia" (2024) showcases decades of collaborative work by La Pocha Nostra with artists in Oaxaca, Mexico. "Alien Planet" (2024), an exclusive sneak peek at a brand-new film created during LPN’s ongoing artistic residency in Roswell, New Mexico. Directed by Balitrónica and Gómez-Peña. "Their Wall, Our Canvas" exhibits nearly fifty multimedia pieces by San Diego artists-activists Antonia Davis (b.1955), Bob Davis (b.1952), and Natalia Ventura (b.1998). Antonia is a founding member of the San Diego Puppet Insurgency, and has led art builds with dozens of local social and environmental justice groups over the last twenty years. Bob has been a lifelong supporter and photo documentarian of local struggles. Natalia, an emerging artist-activist from Chula Vista, met the couple in 2023 while leading art intervention projects to save Friendship Park. Since then the three have formed a bond rooted in their shared passions for art and activism. Several of the works on view are products of their collaboration. Spanning across textile, installation, photography, performance, painting, and video, the works in this exhibition aim to deconstruct harmful narratives and replace them with stories and images that heal. These artists contribute to the Collective by helping us imagine a different reality, painting the picture of what liberation looks like, and making the revolution irresistible. Gallery reception for "Bird Singers" at City Gallery at San Diego City College. City Gallery is a space for exploring art across all media and genres. The gallery showcases work that reflects the experiences and issues of the world in which we all live today. Located in the heart of City College and downtown San Diego, City Gallery is uniquely situated within San Diego's cultural and civic centre. Located above the Flower Fields, ArtWalk Carlsbad is back for its 5th year, bringing fine art, live music, and interactive art experiences, offered free to attendees. The weekend-long festival focuses on fine art for sale by artists, who travel from all over the U.S. and Mexico to show and sell their work. In a venue overlooking the ocean, guests can explore different facets of art, while enjoying beautiful coastal views. The festival will display every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, glass work, fine jewelry, photography and more. More than 150 fine artists’ work will be featured, along with interactive art for families at KidsWalk, a full palette of musical performers, food trucks and stands, and more.
