Our SPOTLIGHT ON Narrative Expressions through Movement class is a dynamic dance workshop designed for adults of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds who are interested in exploring the creative intersection of movement and theater. Whether experienced in dance or new to the art form, participants are welcomed into a space where unique stories can be expressed through the universal language of movement. The workshop focuses on creative movement exercises and improvisational dance structures that emphasize storytelling. Participants will draw inspiration from their personal stories, backgrounds, and life experiences, exploring how movement can convey emotion, narrative, and character. This journey turns every step, gesture, and movement into part of a larger narrative. New Gallery 201 Exhibition in ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station Navigates the Interplay of Culture, Identity and Existence. Gallery 201 at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station debuts “Interlaced,” a thought-provoking solo show by Christian Garcia-Olivo that delves into the evolving nature of identity and culture. SAN DIEGO, CA (AUGUST 31, 2024) – ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station, in collaboration with Dinah Poellnitz and The Hill Street Country Club, is thrilled to present a brand-new exhibition opening in Gallery 201 titled Interlaced, a solo showcase by San Diego-based artist Christian Garcia-Olivo. On display from September 12, 2024, to January 10, 2025, this exhibition delves into the intricate interplay between identity, culture, and the fluidity of existence. Audiences are invited to immerse themselves in a realm where the boundaries between self and society blur, unveiling the complexities of navigating spaces of uncertainty. Christian Garcia-Olivo’s work is a reflection of his journey as a queer Chicano artist, delving into tools of cultural heritage, resistance to societal norms, and the tension between personal and communal identities. His signature use of sculptural paint skins, reminiscent of smooth candy paint and woven Mexican textiles, creates a vivid tapestry that challenges conventional perceptions of art, identity, and belonging. Curated by Dinah Poellnitz, the inaugural David G. Fleet Curator-in-Residence at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station, Interlaced challenges the notion of fixed identity and whose values are inherited and perpetuated. The exhibit reflects the complexities of cultural hybridity, and the strength found in vulnerability, offering a critique of both personal and societal structures. On Thursday, October 31, Halloween, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mission Valley, the open-air shopping center, invites children and their families to visit participating stores to collect Halloween candy (while supplies last). Each participating store will be marked so families know where to go. The Trick-or-Treat event is free of charge with no pre-registration required. Also taking place during the Trick-or-Treat event, Trinity Theatre, a local performing arts company, will host a 30-minute performance of “The Little Old Woman Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything” by Linda Williams from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage in the center’s AMC Court. The performance, designed for children ages 3 to 5, will be free of charge, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. Following the performance, attendees can meet the actors at the Trinity Theatre space located next to Outback (near the Target entrance). Members of the Kumeyaay community of San José de la Zorra in Baja California are seeking to preserve their language for future generations.

On November 24, 5-6 p.m. we will be hosting a talk titled “Visualizing Light and Enlightenment Ideology in ‘Glimmer.” This talk will be given by Professor Scott Dale, a professor of Spanish Studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The talk is part of Julia San Romans exhibition. The European Enlightenment championed faith in the human spirit, ingenuity and our capacity to reason and overcome adversity. Scientific discoveries in the 18 th -century modernized Western civilization, but it also inspired us to ask questions, inquire, solve complex problems and, more importantly, have faith in our ability to move forward intellectually. Although the Enlightenment was the philosophical sunrise for a new era in social progress over two centuries ago, we still see reiterations of this positivist spirit in various forms in our world today, whether it be in architecture, literature, design, cuisine, fashion or art. In Julia San Román’s series called, “Glimmer,” we find ourselves before a bifurcated, intense, compact and abrupt visual space where Enlightenment energy is revisited once again. In several iterations of “Glimmer” we see that the pictorial plane is divided into two very different languages to underscore the brilliance of the spirit of the Enlightenment. These two juxtaposed visual languages are accentuated to paint us a poignant philosophical contrast all too familiar: the tension between anxious, emotional, melancholic and expressive reality and the more abstract space characterized by clarity, intelligence, reason and optimistic determinism. They are clearly two opposing spaces and forces, and, for San Román, this graphic union in "Glimmer” underscores the beauty, necessity and desire for eternal hope and optimism.
