This one-hour special features actor John Lithgow going back to school to demonstrate the transformative power of arts education. He immerses himself with teachers and students to explore four arts disciplines: dance, ceramics, silk-screen printing and vocal jazz ensemble. The program celebrates how arts education nurtures and inspires the hearts and minds of students of all ages.

East County Multicultural Festival on November 4 set to host the event in El Cajon in person for the 6th year Welcome Newcomer Network is pleased to announce our 6th Multicultural Festival will take place Nov. 4, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at EJE ACADEMIES. The event will include multicultural food, cultural dance, a show of traditional costumes, story-telling, games and raffle drawings. For this year, we anticipate over 1,000 attendees. The Welcome Newcomer Network (WNN) is a working group which consists of over 40 agencies, school districts, social service organization, health facilities, and the County of San Diego. The WNN was formed to aid agencies in reaching out to our new families as they adapt to life in East County. The mission of the WNN is to encourage respect and understanding of diverse cultures through community education and new comer support coordination. Our festival was inaugurated in 2017 to salute and activate our newcomers to contribute to the community as fully empowered and engaged citizens. Our 2017, 2018, 2019 festivals were both joyous and uplifting events connecting people from so many different countries, cultures and languages, and in 2021 and 2022 we held a drive-thru event! The entertainment is provided by local musicians, school bands, dancers and poets. Our festival is a truly exhilarating display of the harmonious possibilities for San Diego’s fast-growing hub for our refugee and immigrant populations. It is critical that we spread some good feeling in today’s divisive climate. Help us spread the word and join us in celebrating and empowering our newcomer voices to participate fully in weaving the fabric of this amazing diverse community. Ceres Madoo is a Los Angeles based mixed media artist, who describes herself as a mix of a mix. West Indian, American, Black, Indian, Jewish and Mormon, like her art work, Ceres’ personal identity defies categorization. With a BA from UC San Diego ('89) and an MFA from Rutgers University, her conceptual, fluxus, critical educational roots happily collide with her inherent interests in non-western art, folk and craft methodologies. Ceres teaches and works in all mediums. This year, her primary focus has been in working in ceramics and painting with a re-imagination of what it means to be a human creature.
