The Hill Street Country Club presents Sound & Liberation with Joy Guidry and special guest DJ, at Oceanside Theatre Company at the Brooks Bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry performs her album AMEN, experimenting with various forms of southern Black American music, from jazz to gospel and ambient. In AMEN, there is a lot of experimentation with different forms of southern Black American music. I wanted to lean heavily on my Texas, Louisiana, and Creole roots in this project. There were many days spent with my ancestors during the writing of this album, and I’m eternally grateful for the music they sang to me during our time together.. Seeing everything I have in my life, all I can do is throw my hands in the air and ask for my God’s protection. I give up the want for control, throw my hands in the air, and yell Amen, Amen, Amen! Dr. Taylor Byas, Ph.D. (she/her) is a Black Chicago native currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is a Features Editor for The Rumpus, a Poetry Acquisitions Editor for Variant Literature, an Editorial Board Member for Beloit Poetry Journal, and an Editorial Advisor for Jackleg Press. She is the author of two chapbooks, her debut full-length, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times, from Soft Skull Press, which won the 2023 Maya Angelou Book Award and the 2023 Chicago Review of Books Award in Poetry, and Resting Bitch Face, forthcoming in Fall of 2025. She is also a co-editor of The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol X: Alabama from Texas Review Press, and of Poemhood: Our Black Revival, a YA anthology on Black folklore from HarperCollins. The Game Music of Brett Heatley, aka HeatleyBros of Los Angeles, has been a staple of the internet for over a decade. HeatleyBros crystalized the nostalgic retro game sound and his music has been heard in millions of videos totaling many billions of views. His catalog has been used in countless games, with three times charting #1 on the IOS App Store and Apple Arcade, most notably in his ongoing work for the handheld phenomenon “Retro Bowl.” HeatleyBros’ desire to continuously push the boundaries of possibility has led him to his first major collaboration with longtime friend Mikey Kettinger of Mikey’s Imaginary Friends of San Diego. Mikey’s Imaginary Friends an alternative/indie project that began in Florida in 2006. It has been featured around the USA on radio, television, films and performances that combine experiential art with music performance. Their new album ‘What This Art Is About’ is a bold take on Indie Pop and Alternative, built from exceptional songwriting of Mikey paired with the world-building imagination of HeatleyBros. Their complementary combination of skills unite in a truly original sonic experience, challenging the listener to follow their heart, make art, and build community.
