San Diego’s favorite holiday tradition is back; Holiday Lunches at Fort Oak are returning for six very special midday services. Not normally open during lunch, Fort Oak is taking the holidays as an excuse to decorate the space and get tipsy and toasty while the sun is still shining. Decked out in their holiday best, the restaurant will be serving up Fort Oak favorites, alongside some new dishes Chef Brad Wise loves to indulge in during the holidays. Chef Brad’s cozy hearth grilled fare feels extra magical this time of year and behind the bar, Bar Manager Jess Stewart is serving up new, festive cocktails, with some special bubbles and bottles brought in just for the occasion. Guests are encouraged to set their out of office messages, leave the car at home, and bring their office pals, friends and family to join Fort Oak in celebrating the best time of year. The Coronado Historical Association is inviting the Coronado community to help tell and preserve a largely neglected part of the community's heritage — the history of Coronado’s African-American community. This rich history, which spans over 135 years, is largely absent from the historical record of Coronado. This history includes not just African American residents of Coronado, it also includes those who attended school or worked in Coronado, as well as those who served at Naval Base Coronado. CHA is preparing for an upcoming exhibit that will delve into this valuable history. CHA and local historians have already uncovered many important resources, including photographs, school yearbooks, and newspaper articles, however, CHA is seeking the help of community members to help us learn more about this previously under-researched part of our community history. If you have photographs, documents, or stories to share (from any period,1885-2023) please stop by CHA on Friday, October 13 for Coronado’s African American History Community Collecting Day.
