The California Seaweed Festival is an in-person FREE family friendly event celebrating the seaweed diversity of California! The festival will showcase seaweed uses and applications in art, cooking, farming, science, sustainable technology, and conservation. At the all-day event, we will have booths, exhibits, workshops, galleries, and hands-on activities to immerse you and your family in seaweed fun and knowledge. We also encourage the use of masks when in a crowded and enclosed areas, following the California set guidelines. "Maps & Memories” is inspired by Mingei International Museum’s Washi Transformed exhibit featuring highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations that explore the astonishing potential of Japanese handmade paper, known as washi. This concert features the San Diego Children’s Choir in works by Ilse Weber, as well as “Six Japanese Gardens” for solo percussion by Kaija Saariaho and the Hausmann Quartet performing Kojiro Umezaki’s “(Cycles) What falls must rise” for shakuhachi, string quartet and electronics. The Valley Arts Festival is an annual celebration of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians and the Luiseño history and culture, aiming to help support and celebrate the indigenous population that lived on the land we now known as Oceanside. AF aims to educate the community on the beauty and strength of this amazing culture. Each year a portion of proceeds from the festival is donated to the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation for enrichment programs. 4 Mondays October 2, 9, 16 & 30 from 6 – 8 p.m. *Last class of the series is 6 – 9 p.m. In this 4-week class, instructor Lydia Kardos will teach the basics of handbuilding to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with glazes. Students will complete various projects throughout the course, learning the basics of clay materials and handbuilding — skills necessary to work independently in open studio. Choose from dates in October: Oct. 7, 11, 21 or 25 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This workshop teaches the basics in Stained Glass. No previous glass experience is needed. During the workshop, students will complete a small project using glass they select from a variety of colors and textures. Different patterns are available to choose from. Students will learn how to handle glass, cut and grind glass, apply copper foil, and solder pieces together. Glass is included in the class price and all tools are supplied. Material fee: $10 payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop. No experience necessary.
