Prize winners, including the recipient of the Leslie Von Kolb Memorial Award, will be announced at the opening reception. Our juror this year is Armando Pulido, Writer and Curatorial Assistant, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Pulido is a regular contributor to Frieze magazine. He has reviewed exhibitions in Los Angeles that help to expand the social art histories of contemporary art, such as the Made In L.A. biennial and Painting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and The Great Wall. His research has focused on art from the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, Mexican Muralism, and contemporary U.S. Latinx art. He has contributed to exhibition projects at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and was recently a fellow of the AllPaper Seminar at the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College. Prior to the Lucas Museum, Armando held curatorial positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art. On Monday, December 2, Grammy-nominated pianist Andrius Žlabys will perform a varied program of works by J.S. Bach and César Franck and his own composition Echoes of Light, an homage to Mozart. Žlabys states, “At the center of the piece, there are two fragments from Mozart’s Requiem. [What follows is] influenced by Carl Sagan’s writings. I imagine fragments of Mozart’s Requiem continuing to echo through space and time, perhaps never again detected, yet always present.” Žlabys has received acclaim for his appearances with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Rotterdam Symphony, and Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires. All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artists in the Sharon & Joel Labovitz Entry Hall. Resembling dioramas, they are made from common household objects and craft material and traditionally combine elements from mestizo spirituality, and popular culture. San Diego Public Library presents Nuestra Cultura, a series celebrating and recognizing the rich heritage, history, contributions, and culture of our Latin American and Indigenous communities. We recognize that there is deeply rooted pride in heritage and that self-identities are important, unique, and may change over time.
