The Los Angeles Basketry Guild and Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild proudly present Special classes with Lissa-Jane de Sailles. Four 1-day, 8-hour workshops with 12 students maximum. Lissa-Jane de Sailles lives and works on Jerrinja/Wandi Wandian Land on the south east coast of New South Wales, Australia. Lissa-Jane teaches fiber art locally and internationally and works with basketry techniques to create sculptural forms and installations with locally foraged natural fibers and textiles. This is a rare opportunity for students to learn from an Australian basketry artist! Two classes in Los Angeles area are September 21 & 22, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Two classes in San Diego area (El Cajon) are September 28 & 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Classes are for all levels of experience and cost for each is $95 (price covers class fee, materials and teacher preparation and expenses). Learn to wet felt soap! August 10, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Join this 2-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of transforming loose wool into felted fabric. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. And in this class, each student will make a felted soap. What are felted soaps? A felted soap is the union of a washcloth and a bar of soap. The wool wrapped around the soap becomes a seamless piece of felt and helps prolong the life of the soap while offering a gentle exfoliation of the skin. The instructor will take you step by step through the felting process, starting with creating a color palette and design using a wide selection of dyed merino wool. Each student will be making 1 felted soap to take home. If time and interests permit, additional soaps will be available to make for $10 each (paid cash to instructor) or to take and make at home. The soaps used for this class are made with all natural ingredients, scented with essential oils and made in the US. For allergies or soap preference, students can bring their own soap to wrap. No experience necessary. Ages 8+ welcome. From the organizers: For 24 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer. Whether you have been with us all 24 years or have yet to experience the wonder of this artist—who plays from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 25th Summer Festival. Romero, a native San Diegan, with a heritage in Guadalajara, first performed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library as a young boy, and it was with him that the Athenaeum planned its first Summer Festival in 1999, the organization's 100th anniversary. Each year, Romero chooses composers to study in depth, sharing the full range of their artistry. Dinners will be offered at the Athenaeum after the first and last concerts (July 7 and 28), providing an opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal. All concerts begin at 4 PM at the Athenaeum.
