On Kumeyaay Way, you will have the opportunity to build and launch tule boats with Stan Rodriguez, our Keynote Speaker and President of the Kumeyaay Community College, and learn about traditional crafts and customs. Visit 48 Exhibitors on Ocean Alley with ocean-related, interactive, educational projects, engaging each member of the family with the wonder and fragility of our oceans. Be sure to get a sticker for your Passport at every booth when you participate in an interactive science or art project designed for children of all ages. Register at the Blue Latitudes booth for a hands-on demonstration of a DeepTrekker Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) at the La Jolla Shores Hotel pool between 10:30 a.m. and Noon. Tour THE MAP of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla. Each participant will receive a laminated Fish ID card and discover many of the secrets hidden in THE MAP. At noon, Kevin Robinson, one of SeaWorld’s Trainers who helped nurse J.J. the Orphaned Baby Gray Whale back to health, will join us to thank the generous Donors who made J.J.’s new Shade Sail possible. Next, Dave Scott (KUSI Meteorologist, Retired), will Emcee a short program that will conclude with the much-anticipated unveiling of the bronze sculpture, “From the HEIGHTS of Mt. Soledad to the DEPTHS of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla, a project Walter Munk believed was critical to the understanding of what lies offshore. Meet the Artist, Carl Glowienke, our generous Donors, and the many experts who graciously gave of their time and talent to make this project a reality! Saturday, November 4 celebrates the 2nd annual Gathering of Nations at the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center and the Bonita Sunnyside SD County Library. The gathering celebrates indigenous cultures, highlighting craftspeople, storytellers, food and educational resources held on traditional Kumeyaay lands. The museum and event will take place in the Greg Cox Civic Complex located at 4355 Bonita Road, in Bonita CA. 91902. The events are free and open to the public. The event will be opened by tribal elders and delegates and includes Kumeyaay Bird Singers. The cultural bird songs, of which there are 300 in the takut cycle, are a metaphor for life. On stage find presentations and regalia from Aztec Dancers, Mexi’cayotl Indio Cultural Center, and the “Eagle Spirit Dancers” Ben Hale dancers, presentation of powwow culture. Visiting tribal members from New Mexico. Visitors will find educational resources from Kumeyaay College’s Kosay Kumeyaay Market, Blackfeet displays with Chuck Jenson, and Kumeyaay tribal community of San Jose de la Zorra, Baja California, Mexico, basket weaver Aurelia Ojeda Melendrez. Aurelia is famous for her coiled rattlesnake basket patterns and Kumeyaay basket hats. Food at the event includes Lucy Hale’s Frybread stand, Taco El Pintor, and The Empanada Spot. Inside the museum, visitors can discover the history of the Sweetwater Valley as well as explore the elements of a new Kumeyaay permanent exhibition opening in 2024. The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center is currently gathering funding to create an exhibition about Kumeyaay past and present in the Sweetwater Valley. This exhibition will allow visitors to see and hear the Kumeyaay language including the names of places, objects and animals. The language will be spoken by members of Kumeyaay College's language department. The exhibition will be implemented by Kumeyaay College students with exhibition designer Michael Connolly of the Campo Band of Kumeyaay. The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center is located in the Sweetwater River Valley near ancient Kumeyaay village sites including the village of Apusquel. The eldest of the multi-talented, multi-award-winning Kanneh-Mason family, Isata Kanneh-Mason wowed audiences with her debut performance alongside her brother Sheku in the 2021–22 Season. Just days before performing at Carnegie Hall, she returns to The Conrad in a solo showcase with a gorgeous program of piano classics. Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason is in great demand internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. She offers eclectic and interesting repertoire, with her recital programmes encompassing music from Haydn and Mozart, via Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, Chopin and Brahms, to Gershwin and beyond. In concerto, she is equally at home in Felix Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, whose piano concerto featured on Isata’s chart-topping debut recording, as in Prokofiev and Dohnányi. In 2022/23 Isata stepped into her role as Artist in Residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performing three concerti across the season at London’s Cadogan Hall. She returned to Dortmund’s Konzerthaus as one of their Junge Wilde artists and made multiple visits to both the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Other highlights of the season include recital performances at the Barbican, Queen Elizabeth, and Wigmore halls in London, the Philharmonie Berlin, National Concert Hall Dublin, Perth Concert Hall, Prinzregententheater Munich, and the Sala São Paulo. As concerto soloist, Isata appears with the Orchestra of Opera North, New World Symphony Miami, City of Birmingham Symphony, Duisburg Philharmonic, Barcelona Symphony, Geneva Chamber Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, and Orchestra of Norwegian Opera. She returns to the Baltimore Symphony and recently made her long-awaited debut with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Isata is a Decca Classics recording artist. Her 2019 album, Romance – the Piano Music of Clara Schumann, entered the UK classical charts at No. 1, Gramophone magazine extolling it as “one of the most charming and engaging debuts.” This was followed in 2021 by Summertime, an album of 20th-century American repertoire featuring Samuel Barber’s Piano Sonata and a world premiere recording of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Impromptu in B minor. In November 2021, along with her cellist brother, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Isata released her first duo album, entitled Muse, beautifully demonstrating the siblings’ musicality and refined skill borne from years of playing and performing together. Her new solo album, Childhood Tales, was released in May 2023. Isata was an ECHO Rising Star in 2021/22, performing in many of Europe’s finest halls and is also the recipient of the coveted Leonard Bernstein Award and an Opus Klassik award for best young artist.
