  • The San Diego Veterans For Peace will be setting up its Arlington West Memorial in front of the USS Midway Museum to honor the 288 brothers and sisters from Southern California who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The press and public are encouraged to stop by, honor the fallen, read their names, and reflect on their sacrifice. Chapter members from the various military services will be present to answer questions about the memorial and to ask the public to reflect on these wars and ongoing wars around the globe.   • On Sunday afternoon, May 21, PHES Gallery will open its newest exhibition, “Story Quilts” in Carlsbad, CA. "Story Quilts" features the work of eleven local textile and fiber artists; Sandra Lauterbach, Nancy Lemke, Viviana Lombrozo, Nelda McComb, Dan Olfe, Marty Ornish, Karen Rips, Tara Ritacco, Dinah Sargeant, Deborah Weir, and Susan Willen. Calling all Poets! A poetry writing competition will be held at PHES Gallery in conjunction with “Story Quilts.” Please join us for a creative dive into ekphrastic poetry - poetry written in response to art. The public will have the opportunity to write a poem (or poems) in response to the show at the Gallery. Submissions will be accepted through June 11. Each entry must include the quilt number, your name, and the title of your poem. Poems will be performed in the Gallery courtyard on June 25 at 5 p.m., followed by a poet's reception. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 poems.
