From the organizers: The first opera San Diego Opera produced, this beloved masterwork follows the lives of a group of young struggling artists in Paris, including the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì, as they navigate love, friendship, and hardship. Full of some of the greatest melodies and arias Puccini ever composed, the production is inspired by San Diego Opera’s acclaimed 2020 drive-in La bohème centered in Rodolfo’s memory of an unforgettable romance. These performances feature thrilling debuts and the exciting return of many SDO favorites. With Kathleen O’Mara as Mimì (Nov. 1 & 3), Sarah Tucker as Mimì (Nov. 2), Joshua Blue as Rodolfo (Nov. 1 & 3), César Delgado as Rodolfo (Nov. 2), Latonia Moore as Musetta, Leroy Davis as Marcello, Harold Wilson as Colline, and Søren Pedersen as Schaunard. Lidiya Yankovskaya will also make her first appearance with San Diego Opera, conducting the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. She has conducted more than 40 world premieres, including 17 operas. Keturah Stickann – a visionary director whose work has appeared with opera companies around the world – will reprise her role as director of La bohème after having directed San Diego Opera’s innovative drive-in production in 2020. From the organizers: San Diego Dance Theater annually seeks newly emerging dancemakers to participate in the Emerging Choreographers Showcase & Awards, a competition that awards three prizes to participants: Best Overall Choreography, Best Dancer, and Audience Favorite. This exhilarating show is a beloved staple in San Diego, with its main purpose being to bring exposure and support to growing choreographers in the community. In 2023, we removed the age requirements to include dancemakers who emerge at any age in life. Read about the 2024 finalists here. About the showcase and awards: San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to present the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase & Awards! The event formerly known as Young Choreographer's Showcase & Prize has evolved to reflect the agelessness of dance and support the pursuit of growth at any point in life. There is no longer a maximum age limit for eligibility, and we hope to see even more incredible dancing and dance-making! Finalists will compete for three prizes, as voted on by YOU, the audience, and the panel of judges. Grand prize is $1000 and a night in Live Arts Fest 2024 awarded to "Best Overall." "Best Dancer" and "Audience Favorite" both receive a $500 prize, with "Best Dancer" also receiving an invitation to dance at a future SDDT event. Mi Gente CA, award-winning arts & culture organization with a mission to support underrepresented artists, announces its highly anticipated “Block Party” event. This festival marks the first city in Mi Gente CA’s expansion throughout California, and will precede the organization’s creative cultural work in San Diego County. The event will feature approximately 25 arts vendors, food and drink options, a live DJ performance, and games for all to enjoy.
