Join us for Voices on the Inside at the SDPL, a self-portrait photography and poetry exhibit by incarcerated members of Poetic Justice. Voices on the Inside unites our community with a multi-modal art exhibition, free to the public, rooted in the urgent need for a collaborative solution to amending punitive approaches to incarceration and increasing rehabilitation and healing. This exhibition offers an innovative and constructive approach to transforming prisons and jails by acknowledging and listening to those who are surviving incarceration. By bringing together communities for the purpose of dialogue, bridging differences, healing from harm together, and witnessing the humanity behind each individual, Poetic Justice hopes to make real change in the lives of incarcerated women. Poetic Justice is a community within and beyond women's prisons and jails, working alongside one another with a shared belief in the power of self-expression to change lives. Voices on the Inside, funded by the NEA, the World Design Capital and the California Arts Council, is a Poetic Justice photography and poetry program in collaboration with photographer Lisa Loftus that brings together incarcerated members of our community from California, Oklahoma, and Tijuana. On view at the downtown San Diego Central Library's Popular Library Fairway, April 29 through July 31, 2024. Jesmyn Ward will join Dean Nelson for an interview as part of the 2025 Writer's Symposium by the Sea, Writing That Redeems. Jesmyn Ward has been hailed as the standout writer of her generation, proving her “fearless and toughly lyrical” voice in novels, memoir, and nonfiction. Betsy Burton of the American Booksellers Association has called her “the new Toni Morrison.” Ward is a MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and in 2017, she became the first woman and the first person of color to win two National Book Awards for Fiction—joining the ranks of William Faulkner, Saul Bellow, John Cheever, Philip Roth, and John Updike. Her books include "Let Us Descend," "Sing Unburied, Sing," "Salvage the Bones," and "Navigate Your Stars." Jane Gordon, a pregnant housewife, is abducted by robots, taken to the rainforest, and forced to perform Hedda Gabler by her robot captors. Meanwhile Nugget, her ten-year-old daughter, with the aid of her milquetoast father, an eager documentary filmmaker and her small arms dealing uncle must rescue Jane – whether she wants to be saved or not. As we approach the AI singularity, Heddatron constructs a bizarre and strangely familiar world of reality TV and rocket launchers where everyone, artificial or otherwise, just wants to feel a little bit human. Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) enhances the options for self-defense so these options become viable for a woman who is attacked. Included will be sexual assault prevention, awareness, and senior safety. Elaine will demonstrate a few simple self-defense techniques that anyone can do.
