Jesmyn Ward has been hailed as the standout writer of her generation, proving her “fearless and toughly lyrical” voice in novels, memoir, and nonfiction. Betsy Burton of the American Booksellers Association has called her “the new Toni Morrison.” Ward is a MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and in 2017, she became the first woman and the first person of color to win two National Book Awards for Fiction—joining the ranks of William Faulkner, Saul Bellow, John Cheever, Philip Roth, and John Updike. Her books include "Let Us Descend," "Sing Unburied, Sing," "Salvage the Bones," and "Navigate Your Stars." Included in the ticket is live music to begin at 6:15, when doors open for general admission seating.   • Lucas Smith, an artist and resident of Mission Valley, San Diego, California, is making his solo exhibition debut with “Minimal Designs & Organic Shapes” at Gallery 21, Spanish Village Art Center in April. Relocating from the Midwest in 2021, Lucas brings a fresh vision to abstractionism inspired by exploration of America’s Finest City. This contemporary artist is not afraid to use color and showcase his personality through his imagination and creativity. Smith’s palette choices are bold & vibrant. His artwork is a series of layers, each with their own unique significance. Lucas invites his viewers in, not holding back, taking them on a journey through is artwork. Each piece tells a story and seeks to engage with the viewer not only to inspire but to soothe the mind. Lucas is an award-winning artist with work juried into galleries across San Diego County the past year including, Gallery 21 at Spanish Village Art Center, Ashton Art Gallery, San Diego Watercolor Society, North Coastal Art Gallery, Covet Gallery, and OMA Art Alliance. He is also a resident artist in Studio 12 at Ashton Art Gallery at Art on 30th.   • This week of Summer Camp is all about learning to weave! Does your child have an interest in fiber arts and learning to weave? This ancient craft connects all ages with its range of options, from simple to complex. In this week-long camp, kids will explore the art & craft of weaving on a variety of looms. Using the principles of STEAM while honing fine motor skills and problem-solving, kids & teens will: -Learn about different fiber properties -Make and use a variety of looms to weave on -Design patterns and explore color palettes -Explore their own styles -And actively do math with hands-on creative weaving! This camp is recommended for kids and teens, ages 8-16 years. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child or teen transferred, let us know! If you’d like your child or teen to stay during the lunch hour, there’s a $25 fee for the week to cover the lunchtime gap. They can bring a lunch and have lunch with us with the option to craft after lunch, or head out to grab a lunch and head back to the studio to eat in a safe, welcoming space.
