  • "Cups to Connections: Global Gestures of Hospitality" embraces the art of hospitality and how the act of sharing a drink has the extraordinary power to bring people together, fostering a deep sense of community and belonging. Highlighting a wide range of global traditions, the objects in Cups to Connections tell the stories of heritage and craft from across time and cultures. Hospitality is the bridge that forges connections – each custom unique, yet the act of inviting others to join for a beverage, a universal language. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with The House of Pacific Relations, a consortium of houses located in Balboa Park representing 31 cultures – bringing various cultural groups together to foster and cultivate a spirit of understanding, tolerance, and goodwill. Visit the houses on Saturdays and Sundays to experience a meaningful cultural connection, with the opportunity to sample authentic food and beverages from every corner of the globe. • From the KPBS/Arts newsletter: Maybe I've been working in local arts for too long, but if you gave me two seconds to name whatever jazz trumpeters first came to mind, I'd say Miles Davis and Gilbert Castellanos, our own local icon. If you're anything like that, then this concert is made for you. Castellanos will perform at the Rady Shell with his band to celebrate Davis' "Kind of Blue," which was released 65 years ago to the date of this concert. 7:30 p.m., Aug. 17. $18-$70. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Join Gilbert Castellanos and friends as they celebrate Miles Davis and his all-star band at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. One of the greatest albums of all time and the best-selling jazz album ever, Miles Davis' masterpiece "Kind of Blue" is as relevant and revered today as when it was recorded in 1959. Talented student musicians of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory perform a pre-concert set.

  • From the KPBS Spring Arts Guide: Playwright James Ijames won a Pulitzer Prize for drama for his spin on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," which brings us Juicy, a queer, smart, Black college student faced with the ghost of his father who shows up at a family barbecue looking for revenge. But these generational woes don't quite play out like Hamlet himself might have expected. Ijames' take is about finding agency and stepping out of the cycles of trauma and violence. Directed by Sideeq Heard at The Old Globe. Details: "Fat Ham." May 25 through June 23. The Old Globe Theatre, 1363 Old Globe Way, Balboa Park. Tickets on sale April 12. From the theater: By James Ijames Original direction by Saheem Ali Directed by Sideeq Heard The 2022 Pulitzer-winning, Tony-nominated sensation Fat Ham is a fresh and funny take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet that The New York Times called “a flat-out hilarious comedy.” During a Southern family cookout, Juicy is confronted by the ghost of his father, who demands revenge for his murder. But Juicy, a young, queer, Black man, has enough on his plate. James Ijames’s remarkable play uses uproarious humor and profound insight to explore the conflict between what you owe your family and what you owe yourself. “Smart, fearless, and wildly entertaining” (The Chicago Tribune). This production includes strong language, mature themes, sexual content, and mild violence.
