  • The Zzymzzy Quartet makes their long awaited return to Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 157th Session of Dim Sum & Jazz! - Seating Begins at 6 P.M. Music from 6:30-8:30 P.M. - Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! About The Zzymzzy Quartet Rhymes with "Whimsy" The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions: they just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: - Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals - Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals - Matt Gill - Clarinet - Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. • The Photographer’s Eye Gallery is hosting an exhibit of hand-crafted photographic prints that were selected in its annual Alternative Photographic Processes juried exhibition, "(S)LIGHT OF HAND." More than 200 entries from across the United States were submitted for this exceptional exhibition. Michael Kirchoff, this year’s juror and editor of Analog Forever Magazine, narrowed down the prints to 40 for display, and named “Manzanita in the Round,” a photogravure by David Marsh, as his Juror’s Choice. Photographer’s Eye Director Donna Cosentino chose “Enchanted Forest,” a gum over salt print by Lisa Brussell, as the Director’s Choice. This exhibit opens on Sept. 14, with an artists’ reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on opening day, and will end on Oct. 19. The Photographer’s Eye Gallery, a non-profit, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment by calling 760-522-2170. The artworks on display are one-of-a-kind, hand-made works using myriad processes, including cyanotype, transfers, gum over platinum, chemilumens, tintypes, kallitypes, salt, phytogram, carbon transfer and more. 3-D works will also be on view. Each work will be accompanied by an explanation of the process involved to create it. In his juror’s statement, Kirchoff praised the artists for their creativity and skill in using historic and modern processes. “What I noticed when going through the submissions is the high caliber of images I found,” Kirchoff said. “Each submission was unique and special in its own way, and I discovered new photographers making excellent work.” He also said that “it is thoroughly evident to me that those living far and wide are playing an integral part in the success of this fine establishment.” The Photographer’s Eye will honor artists David Marsh and Lisa Brussell in a two person exhibit of their works in 2025. https://www.instagram.com/thephotographerseyecollective/ The Photographer’s Eye Collective on Facebook / Instagram
