Join us for our latest Art + Design Workshop: Floral Arranging. This intimate workshop takes place in our Museum's Central Gallery and will be led by San Diego floral designer Gilberto Freihoff. Celebrate the sights, scents, and beauty of flowers and other botanical treasures. In just hours, you will learn about color palettes, textures, design principles and all the artful tricks-of-the-trade to create your own decadent floral composition. No prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided so that you can fully indulge your artistic side and take home your greatest floral masterpieces. Workshop fee includes florals, keepsake vase, professional florist tools, mimosas and nibbles. Due to the seasonal nature of flowers, exact flowers will vary. Space is limited. Stained glass is unusual among the arts because of its direct relationship with light. When light passes through colored glass, different values, textures, and densities combine to form an extraordinary palette. Explore this magic by creating your own unique leaded stained-glass panel. In this 7-week course, you will learn from stained glass professional Lisa Maywood as you complete one or more 2-dimensional panels that will transform any room or space. The enrollment fee covers the cost of basic drawing materials, lead, solder, cement, and the use of the tools and machinery. Glass will be procured by each student on their own outside of class. Blue Dolphin Glass is a great local source in San Diego. If you prefer your own supplies, please bring your own colored pencils and paper that is larger than 12″x12″ to the first class as you plan your project(s). It is also recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, dust mask, gloves). We have eye protection available if you do not have your own. There is no prerequisite for this class. The Wilkinson McAllister Duo is pleased to present a variety of jazz repertoire, from original compositions to their own arrangements of classic jazz standards. Wayne Wilkinson is a headliner jazz guitarist who performs and tours across the country and internationally. For over four decades, Wayne has shared the stage with iconic jazz musicians, world-class performers and a President of the United States. An artist with Benedetto guitars, GHS Strings, and Jim Dunlop picks, Wilkinson is known for his high-octane melodic playing which world-renowned jazz trombonist Bill Watrous noted “is the greatest guitar playing I’ve ever heard.” Colin McAllister is Director of Humanities at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. His performances as a guitarist and conductor have been hailed as ‘sparkling…delivered superbly’ (San Francisco Chronicle), ‘ravishing’ (San Diego Union Tribune) and ‘an amazing tour de force’ (San Diego Story), and he has recorded on the MicroFest, Summit, Innova, Centaur, Naxos, Albany, Old King Cole, Vienna Modern Masters, Carrier, and Tzadik labels. Will Stucky and Lauren Leigh, who are accomplished and award-winning songwriters in their own right, teamed up to write and release their first song, Feel This Way, in December 2023. They have since been writing and harmonizing new songs about the nuanced ups and downs of life in a cheeky indie-folk fashion. They have made a splash in the local indie music scene since releasing their debut duo single last year. Opening the concert will be Aaron Bowen, an acoustic jazz/folk artist with a European flair—Django Reinhardt meets Paul Simon. A Southern California native and the son of four generations of musicians, Aaron has been a student of music and, in particular, a student of the guitar, from an early age. Touring extensively in Europe has gained Aaron a record contract with a Parisian label Seventh Crow Records.
