Jazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet, Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Steph Johnson and a host of others. Rob is a devoted and seasoned instrumentalist, equally confident with standards and original compositions, whose bass sings with a warmth and creative spirit while maintaining an engaging interactive dialogue with the ensemble. Rob has released six recordings as a leader, “Bass is the Space - Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White, Steph Johnson, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is "So In Love" — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, and others. Jazz education plays an important role in his career. He teaches at Gilbert Castellanos Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, The La Jolla Athenaeums “The World Of Jazz” as well as teaching privately. In 2010 Thorsen created “Jazz an American Art Form,” a highly successful jazz educational program that features his quartet and is presented to over 8,000 students annually in primarily under-served communities. He is also involved with and performs with the Voices of Our City Choir, a soul-jazz choir created by his wife Steph Johnson for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego. Ann Annie is the stage name for Portland based composer Eli Goldberg. ann annie began as a simple side project for Eli to explore the world of modular synths and ambient music. As the project grew and took form, he slowly introduced various acoustic instruments into his compositions – most notably in their recent album ‘the wind’. This new sound combines aspects of classical orchestras with string and horn instruments, old country guitar twang and that original electronic modulation to form something wholly unique. Their live show consists of a trio playing piano, saxophone, cello and modular synth performing dreamy, sometimes improvisational, chamber music mixed with atmospheric synth soundscapes. Zane Alexander S.B. is a composer, performer, and community music organizer living in San Diego. Zane’s work makes new music exciting and accessible to both audiences and performers with the aid of unique ensembles, surprising locations, and spontaneous energy. In this talk, Ramírez will set forth an introduction to brown artistic practices that put neo-colonial and liberal reason in crisis. Furthermore, he seeks to think about the paradoxical relationship between contemporary art and indigeneity as a creative entanglement that reshapes the repertoires of art history and museum collections. Pablo José Ramírez is a curator and an author. He is a curator at the Hammer Museum and co-curated "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living" together with Diana Nawi. He was the inaugural adjunct curator of "First Nations and Indigenous Art" at Tate Modern (2019-2023). Ramirez was a co-curator of the 19th Paiz Biennale: Transvisible and part of the curatorial team of the 58th Carnegie International. He is the co-founder of Infrasonica, a leading curatorial platform for non-Western sonic cultures. He holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University of London. Artist James Hubbell has a 70-plus-year career as a contemporary master who expresses himself through nature-inspired art, architecture and functional objects and spaces. Using stone and glass, paint and pen, wood and steel, his works are natural and unconfined. His human and nature-centric design places art in walls, roofs, floors, and furnishings, not separate from, but as extensions of life. In Hubbell’s world, the everyday is elevated to art, and art is for every day. Hubbell recognizes that it is our cities, buildings, structures - our treatment of our environment -that are perhaps our truest expressions of our views and values, our understanding of the ordering of the universe in which we live. Without great fanfare or financial reward, James Hubbell, the non-architect builder, personally led the design and construction of multiple architectural and fine art projects that accomplished meaningful social and educational transformation in Tijuana and San Diego. Architectural designer, sculptor, painter, stained-glass artist, community activist - James Hubbell is one of San Diego’s most prolific artists. His Architecture of Jubilation - is an invitation for all of us to create the world we want to live in. The Opening Reception will feature musician Pablo Dodero! Pablo is a producer, DJ, and writer originally from Tijuana, México. He is currently working on his PhD in Music at UCSD researching Mexico's electronic music history. He has been involved in the DIY music scene in Tijuana, San Diego, and Los Angeles for over two decades and currently performs experimental electronic music under the names Adiós Mundo Cruel and Les Temps Barbares. This exhibition was made possible by a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, the Library Foundation SD and the Ilan-Lael Foundation.
