This one-hour special features actor John Lithgow going back to school to demonstrate the transformative power of arts education. He immerses himself with teachers and students to explore four arts disciplines: dance, ceramics, silk-screen printing and vocal jazz ensemble. Through the exhibition, visitors will explore AAPI culture, customs, and traditions through historical and contemporary fashion and family stories. The exhibit connects and celebrates our cultural communities through performances, fashion, food and events during May. An opening reception on Saturday, May 4 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. will highlight savory and sweet tastings made by local chefs who specialize in Asian Pacific cuisine. Featured dishes include Korean gimbap, Thai spring rolls from Takhrai Thai Restaurant, as well as a refreshing Filipino pandan young coconut dessert. A Chinese Dragon dance as well as Thai and Philippine dance performances highlight the opening of this original exhibition featuring local South Bay San Diego residents. Student fashion designers are invited to attend a special appearance by former Project Runway contestant and renowned designer Kenneth Barlis on Thursday, May 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During this intimate meeting, Barlis will share his journey as a creative force in the fashion industry and provide insights to his inspiration through a fashion show featuring a sampling of his designs. The Hillcrest Farmers Market is filled with over 175 vendors offering a wide variety of locally grow produce, gifts, arts and crafts, flowers, clothing, and more! Over 10,000 people a week visit our market. Many of our local farmers grow their produce organically or with no pesticides. The market also hosts a large variety of prepared and hot food items with an emphasis on international cuisine. We also host weekly entertainment performed by a variety of local musicians. The market opened on April 13, 1997 with only 27 vendors and has continued to grow with the community. We are proud to and maintain our reputation as “The Best” Farmers Market in San Diego County! Jazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet, Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Steph Johnson and a host of others. Rob is a devoted and seasoned instrumentalist, equally confident with standards and original compositions, whose bass sings with a warmth and creative spirit while maintaining an engaging interactive dialogue with the ensemble. Rob has released six recordings as a leader, “Bass is the Space - Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White, Steph Johnson, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is "So In Love" — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, and others. Jazz education plays an important role in his career. He teaches at Gilbert Castellanos Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, The La Jolla Athenaeums “The World Of Jazz” as well as teaching privately. In 2010 Thorsen created “Jazz an American Art Form,” a highly successful jazz educational program that features his quartet and is presented to over 8,000 students annually in primarily under-served communities. He is also involved with and performs with the Voices of Our City Choir, a soul-jazz choir created by his wife Steph Johnson for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego.
