Jazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet, Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Steph Johnson and a host of others. Rob is a devoted and seasoned instrumentalist, equally confident with standards and original compositions, whose bass sings with a warmth and creative spirit while maintaining an engaging interactive dialogue with the ensemble. Rob has released six recordings as a leader, “Bass is the Space - Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White, Steph Johnson, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is "So In Love" — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, and others. Jazz education plays an important role in his career. He teaches at Gilbert Castellanos Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, The La Jolla Athenaeums “The World Of Jazz” as well as teaching privately. In 2010 Thorsen created “Jazz an American Art Form,” a highly successful jazz educational program that features his quartet and is presented to over 8,000 students annually in primarily under-served communities. He is also involved with and performs with the Voices of Our City Choir, a soul-jazz choir created by his wife Steph Johnson for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego. The Jason Mraz Foundation announced “Kaleidoscope,” a musical performance by San Diego area arts program students February 17 at 7 p.m. and 18 at 3 p.m. at California Center for the Arts in Escondido. All organizations participating in the performance are beneficiaries of grants from the Jason Mraz Foundation, whose mission it is to shine for inclusive arts education and the advancement of equality. La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest returns to The Conrad from July 26 to August 24, 2024, bringing the finest musicians in the world to La Jolla for four weeks of exciting concerts. Music Director Inon Barnatan, returning in his sixth year, has created an exciting program titled “Inside Stories.” “This year, the festival becomes an amazing, colorful canvas, bringing to life stories, emotions and the experiences that make us human, all through the power of music,” Barnatan shares. “With an incredible lineup of artists from around the world, we’re diving straight into stories that cover everything life throws at us—be it resilience, heartbreak, love, scandal, or victory.” La Jolla will host some of the finest musicians and performance artists from around the globe, including the much-anticipated debuts of the sensational vocal group VOCES8, guitarist Sean Shibe, and conductor Ludovic Morlot. We’ll also see the return of beloved artists like Augustin Hadelich, Tessa Lark, Alisa Weilerstein, Anthony McGill, Paul Watkins, and James Ehnes, among others. Following his widely acclaimed debut at SummerFest last year, British composer Thomas Adès comes back as the composer-in-residence. He’ll be premiering new works, showing off his talents as both a pianist and a conductor, and taking over The Baker-Baum Concert Hall for a special evening he has curated. SummerFest 2024 also sees the return of the Synergy Initiative, a series co-produced by Inon Barnatan and Clara Wu Tsai, investor and philanthropist, which invites top creators of music, dance, spoken word and visual arts to collaborate across their different art forms and produce performances that inspire our audiences in unexpected and powerful ways. Opening both the festival and the Synergy Series will be a performance of Stravinsky’s "The Soldier’s Tale," conducted by Thomas Adès and brought to life by stunning visuals created by The Paper Cinema, a British puppetry group who will present live manipulation of specially-created paper figures in front of a camera, projected in real-time, as well as live illustration and shadow puppetry. The Synergy Initiative also includes jazz pianist Dan Tepfer performing a mesmerizing blend of jazz improvisation with algorithmic composition, where the piano interacts with visualizations and automated responses, creating a unique, live conversation between musician and technology. Finally, building on the success of their "Counterpoint" program, the Synergy Series will pair pianist Conrad Tao with dancer Caleb Teicher for a newly commissioned evening, celebrating the dialogue between tap dance and classical music. Exploring Mexico's Contemporary Classical Flute & Piano Music Flutist, Julia Barnett, & Pianist, Kathryn Lieppman present a recital of Music of the 20th/21st centuries written by Mexican Composers on Saturday, Sept. 28th, 4pm, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 700 D Ave, Coronado, CA 92118 This program will feature Bichito by Diana Syrse for Piccolo and Piano, Leonardo Coral's "Sonata No Tan Breve," Samuel Zyman's Concerto No. 1, and Eduardo Angulo's "Sonata for Flute and Piano." Admission to the concert is free. However, a free will offering will be taken to support the artists. Ms. Lieppman and Dr. Barnett met while studying music at the esteemed Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and have continued their collaborations throughout the years. The program was inspired by Dr. Barnett's research for her Dissertation, "Performing Practice for Roberto Peña’s Concierto Para Flauta y Orquesta," as well as her collaborations with composer Samuel Zyman. This concert showcases the rich and vibrant flute music of Mexico, and will be the first of many performances focusing on Mexican and Latin American music, culminating in a professional CD showcasing the many gems from south of the border.
