To celebrate the 150th birthday of Robert Frost, one of America's most cherished poets, we are bringing together ten of the top poets from across the nation! FREE and open to everyone! This once-in-a-lifetime Sesquicentennial event will showcase some of the brightest stars in poetry, including Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy K. Smith, Ruth Lilly Prize-winner Allison Joseph, Pulitzer Prize-finalist Bruce Weigl, and Guggenheim Fellowship winner Jay Parini! These literary luminaries will take center stage to read and discuss their poems alongside the timeless works of Robert Frost himself, including classics like “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” “Mending Wall,” and “The Road Not Taken.” This gathering isn’t just for the elite few. It’s a celebration for everyone who cherishes the power of words and the magic of poetry. Kick off the new year with the Borrego Art Institute and its annual showcase of contemporary Latin American art. Artists of Latino heritage or art that has been influenced by Latino culture, including paintings, photography and mixed media, will be featured in the main gallery. A strong contingent of Latino artists from Baja California will round out the show with exciting new work. In the north gallery, award-winning painter Jose Luis Nunez will present a solo exhibit of 20 original paintings highlighting the southern California desert. Nunez works primarily in oils and acrylics and is fascinated by the effects of light and shade on his subjects. Nunez will also teach a landscape painting course on January 20. Hamsa Fae (she/they) presents, Trans Aphrodesia, an intimate, one-night poetry and performance gathering that invites viewers to contemplate repressed eroticism and hyper-sensuality as pathways for transformation. After exhibiting her first works at Mingei International Museum in October 2023, Hamsa installs the second half of her award winning book, Blood Frequency, alongside the debut of her durational performance, "When No One is Watching". From the museum: For Dear Life is the first historical survey of artistic responses to sickness, health, and medicine broadly. The show is informed in part by MCASD’s position in San Diego County, a hub for health science research as well as biotech and pharmaceutical industries. In the past decade, the art world has witnessed an explosion of artistic activity surrounding issues of illness, disability, caregiving, and the vulnerability of the human body. Set in motion by the emergence of movements for disability justice, this activity accelerated with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet since the 1960s, artists have negotiated and deflected the medical gaze, creating works that assert agency in the face of medicalizing labels and that highlight the role of care in producing new forms of community and healing. Increasingly, artists have come to locate illness and disability not in individual bodies, but as part of a web of interconnected societal, environmental, and historical conditions. Funders For Dear Life: Art, Medicine, and Disability is organized by Senior Curator Jill Dawsey, PhD, and Associate Curator Isabel Casso. This exhibition is organized as part of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty Foundation.
