Maritime Museum of San Diego, with an international reputation for excellence in restoring, maintaining, and operating historic vessels, including the world’s oldest active sailing ship, Star of India, invites Museum members, volunteers and public to celebrate the legendary vessel’s 159th birthday Sunday, November 13, 2022. The Museum plans to return the restored Euterpe figurehead to Star of India’s bow in the coming months as preparation for Star of India’s next sail, November 11 and 12, 2023. Star of India, built in 1863, is the world’s oldest active sailing ship and has circumnavigated the globe twenty-one times. Star of India first came to the City of San Diego in 1927. It was not until 1951 when Maritime Museum of San Diego made long-awaited historical renovations to the vessel originally named Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music and poetry. Star of India relies on Maritime Museum of San Diego volunteers and a committed staff for her upkeep. San Diegans and visitors to our region alike will have the chance to come aboard Star of India for waterfront celebration festivities. For this day only, visitors may bring a friend or family member free with purchase of general admission ticket at regular price. General admission tickets provide visitors the opportunity to explore all of the historic vessels in the Maritime Museum plus enjoy dozens of below deck exhibits and galleries nested away and unseen from the embarcadero. General admission tickets include entrance to all Maritime Museum of San Diego vessels and exhibits. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for senior/military/students (13-17) and $10.00 for 12 and under and may be purchased in advance online or at the Maritime Museum of San Diego Ticket Booth located at Star of India Wharf, 1492 N. Harbor Drive (north embarcadero between Grape and Ash Street & next to Portside Pier), San Diego, CA 92101-3309. From San Diego Ballet: San Diego Ballet announces "The Jungle Book," a thrilling blend of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and giant puppets, at Kroc Center’s Joan B Kroc Theatre on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. Rudyard Kipling’s beloved tale of friendship comes to life in this fantastic jungle adventure. This colorful production breathes new life into beloved childhood characters, making the adventures of Mowgli and his animal pals thrilling for kids of all ages and adults, too! "When we work on family-friendly pieces, it is important that we try to do something that has some sort of frame of reference for children,” said Javier Velasco, San Diego Ballet Artistic Director. “'The Jungle Book' with its message of diversity and friendship not only fits our mission well, but the fact that many of the main characters are animals goes to some wonderful dance opportunities.” Join Mowgli and his animal pals as they tumble through the jungle, get wrapped up in the coils of Kaa, the snake, and fight off the menacing Sher Khan, the tiger. Along with traditional ballet, San Diego Ballet’s "The Jungle Book" features hip-hop dancers as orangutans and giant elephant puppets that blend perfectly into the fabric of the piece along with its fun jazzy score. About the Film The Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts will be screening "To The Stars" by Department of Visual Arts Associate Professor Nicole Miller. "To the Stars" is an immersive exploration of identity, voice, pain, and possibility. The film, originally commissioned by SFMOMA in 2019, examines the transformative capacities of practice, rehearsal, and collaboration through scenes with prominent figures of color including Alonzo King's LINES ballet, NASA astronaut Yvonne Cagle, opera singer J'Nai Bridges, and others. Biography Nicole Miller is an associate professor in the Department of Visual Arts at UC San Diego. Miller is a conceptual artist known for her inventive uses of video, often incorporating documentary-style methods into evocative mixed-media installations that deal with self-representation and the experience of looking. Location The Mosaic 113 Auditorium is located in the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego (Mosaic Building).
