The time period for the Spanish Baroque begins roughly in the 1580s and ends in the early 1700s. The art from this region is characterized by visual realism which was consistent with the rest of Europe. Spanish painters also frequently used dark colors and incorporated tenebrism, or strong light sources against primarily black backgrounds. Perhaps the more sombre style that evolved in Spain at this time was a result of Spain's war defeats at the hands of the Netherlands and England, which greatly affected their finances. Spanish Baroque painters were often sponsored by the Catholic Church. They were also heavily supported by the devout Hapsburg emperors who responded well to the severe and noble style of Catholic Counter-Reformation art, which brought religious themes to the masses. It was also the Spanish school in combination with the Dutch Baroque artist who importantly guided European painting toward more naturalism in painting. Spanish masters such as Diego Velasquez, Franciso de Zurbaran, and Juan Sanchez Cotan, and others will be highlighted in this docent-led talk. Follow on social media! Facebook + Instagram

Then don’t miss this workshop – party, really – ‘cause we’ll be looking at comedy through the specific filter of Halloween – and we’ll be doing it in costume! Is that right? Did you hear right? Are you really expected to come in costume to a Zoom writing workshop in the privacy of your own home? You bet you are. Just think about how daring you’ll feel, and recognize that daring is to comedy as apples are to candy apples – indispensable! Does this sound frivolous or really not like a writing class at all? Come on – haven’t you ever struggled to come up with a great Halloween costume? Isn’t it the same struggle as writing a joke? Can’t we fix that? Yes, we can! Or say, how about this? Have you ever thought of a great idea for a Halloween gag or event only to hear a little voice inside your head saying that they’ll never let you get away with that? Isn’t that the same as self-editing a non-Halloween joke or story? Can we fix that? Yes, we can! And even if you don’t care all that much about Halloween, it’ll still be a fun and festive workshop that’ll kick start your comedy and creativity just in time for… well, for whatever comes next. Ages 13-17 welcome! Steffi Dotson & Jon Raleigh teach this class that covers the properties of wood, machine safety and woodworking basics. Students will learn woodworking techniques, and safe practice of machine operations will be taught. Depending on the specific project, joinery techniques, proper sanding and finishing are part of the curriculum. Each attendee will make a project to take home. All materials included. This month-long series is full of hands-on, engaging crafts using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) to teach hand skills to children using safe materials. Each project teaches craftsmanship, dexterity and material exploration. Students will get acquainted with various woodworking tools and techniques and will be guided through a series of exercises that teach hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and craftsmanship. Ongoing Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 3-6 Welcome! Taught by instructor Hayley Haspel-Winick, this ongoing series is full of hands-on crafts for early childhood. Projects are Waldorf and Montessori-inspired using safe, natural materials. Each craft includes exercises that teach skills to young students such as hand-eye coordination and material exploration.
