The Hyde Art Gallery is excited to launch the Fall 2022 semester with IN•SIGHT, the Visual Arts and Humanities Department Faculty and Staff Exhibition. This exhibition will showcase artwork produced by the arts educators here at Grossmont College and provide students, colleagues, and campus visitors with a glimpse into the creative and professional work being created by the faculty and staff within the Art Department. Featuring a diverse range of media, this exhibit also represents the various disciplines taught within Grossmont College's art programs including ceramics, digital media, drawing, jewelry, painting, photography, and sculpture. The community is invited to visit San Diego Automotive Museum during Cars & Coffee for a discounted admission price ($10 before 10 a.m.) or partake in the completely free event outside with coffee and donuts (while supplies last) for guests to enjoy while browsing the wide array of vehicles. The public is also invited to bring their own cars to display in the parking lot for other spectators to enjoy. For the month of September, First Responders plus 4 family members will get into the Museum for free. (First responder is police/sheriff, fire, paramedic, lifeguards. First responder must be present and must show their ID/badge). Some exciting cars on display in the “Cars with Character Exhibit” include a Speed Racer, the Ecto- 1 from the 2016 Ghostbusters Film, and the Bat Cycle from the 60’s TV series. This amazing new exhibit also includes Herbie, KITT, the Mystery Machine, and the Pizza Planet truck from Pixar films as well as a jeep from Jurassic Park. Join us for an artist talk on August 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ! Lori Mitchell, and Gillian Moss will all share more about themselves, their process, and their works in their exhibition, Turning Tides! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. From the organizers: Celebrating ballet masterworks from the 20th century by the father of American ballet, George Balanchine, and the famed New York City Ballet principal dancer, choreographer, and artistic director Peter Martins. 'Rubies' In 1967, the great Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, created his world famous ballet Jewels for the New York City Ballet. The three act ballets all have a different composer and motif. Rubies, with music by Igor Stravinsky, is the second act of the ballet and truly captures the sexy energy and athleticism of our country. The ballet is packed with adventure, fun and playfulness, and the dazzling bejeweled costumes will take your breath away. 'Divertimento' from 'Le Baiser De La Fée' Divertimento from Le Baiser De La Fée (the Fairy’s Kiss) was created for the New York City Ballet for the 1972 Stravinsky Festival. The New York Times dance critic has described the ballet as one of George Balanchine’s greatest and most unusual works. The choreography is deeply poetic and has always moved audiences by its light and shade, creating an experience you will never forget. 'Ash' With accelerated tempi to the exciting music by Michael Torke, Peter Martins, former artistic director of New York City Ballet, launches 10 dancers on a non-stop series of thrilling solos, duets, and ensemble dances that leaves audiences amazed and thrilled. Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest (BBB) in partnership with Empower by GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY) is holding a no cost virtual business summit to support immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs. According to an American Economic Review study, “immigrants are 80% more likely to start a business than people born in the U.S.” The educational summit will offer support and tools such as micro-financing and resources to help these entrepreneurs succeed. Immigrant and refugee entrepreneur speakers will also share stories on their journey and how they became an entrepreneur in the community. Jason Veiock, Senior Director, Safety, Security and Resiliance at GoDaddy, will share strategies on how to stay resilient through tough times and AZ local entrepreneur, Dawlat Alrifai from Dawlat’s Handcrafted Soaps, on how she found small business success. We’ve got two masters of their crafts, luminaries in their respective fields, coming together for the first time. Joe Rathburn knows songs for every occasion; Marilyn McPhie knows stories about every possible subject. It will be fun to see what happens when they collaborate on a set list! Joe Rathburn, a true professional, has been entertaining and enchanting San Diego audiences since 1979, including over 1200 shows at the Tin Fish. His well-honed stage skills, extensive repertoire, brilliant guitar work, and masterful songwriting win over every audience. Since 2005, he’s hosted The Folkey Monkey, showcasing some of San Diego’s best local musical talent. Marilyn McPhie has been telling stories professionally since 1985 and has performed for groups from preschool to adult, from Massachusetts to California. She has told stories for assemblies, classes and festivals, has lectured for several colleges and universities, and has performed for schools, libraries, museums, civic and church groups and corporate and private gatherings. She has directed a troupe of student storytellers and has written reviews for national storytelling and parenting publications. Marilyn is the President of the Storytellers of San Diego and recent Pacific Region Director for the National Storytelling Network.
