This talk will be a wake-up call, a call to action, and an antidote to despair! There is no charge for this online event but you must register in advance: Our speaker will discuss “the state of the planet’s health” from a scientific point of view. We will gain an understanding of where humans have and have not exceeded the capacity of the planet to support life, as illustrated in the book "Breaking Boundaries" which Owen co-authored with Johan Rockstrom. This book surveys the latest thinking in planetary science as published in the peer-reviewed Nature and Science magazines. We will also learn about Owen’s latest book, "Earth for All", which will be published on September 19th. A collaboration with five other authors, it uses a unique analysis to answer the question, “What is required for all of humanity to have a good life within planetary boundaries”? Owen will take us through the five extraordinary turnarounds needed to achieve this goal. There will be time for questions from the audience.

The book “Art as Social Practice: Technologies for Change” explores how artists use their creative practices to raise consciousness, form communities and cause social impact through new technologies. Tactical media artist xtine burrough, who presented in the Context Exhibit Series at Kellogg Library in 2018, returns to campus to discuss the new anthology of socially engaged artists’ writings that she co-edited. Book contributor and artist Kim Abeles will discuss her environmental and community-based artworks. Ariana Brown is a queer, Black, Mexican American poet with 13 years of experience writing, performing and teaching poetry. Her work focuses on Black relationality, queer kinship and imagining a world where Black girls are free. She is the author of the poetry collections “We Are Owed” (2021) and “Sana Sana” (2020). She is a 2014 national collegiate poetry slam champion who owes much of her practice to performance communities led by Black women poets from the South. Drawing on her lived experience and her research, Brown will trace her attempts to recover Black girlhood not just for herself, but for other Black girls too. Combining storytelling, poems and dialogue, this artist talk is an opportunity to hear from Brown about how her identities and politics shape her writing. The event will take place online via Zoom. For more than 20 years, Poway OnStage has partnered with the world-renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre to present its annual Musical Youth Theater Camp. Children K-12th grade will audition, rehearse and stage a full-scale musical performance in just six days! This year, local young thespians will perform an all-new version of the classic tale "Rumplestiltskin." Auditions and participation are free and open to the public as they are supported by Poway OnStage’s donor supported Arts in Education Initiative. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Richie Furay is an American music luminary. Celebrated for pioneering the Country-Rock sound as founding member of the genre defining groups Buffalo Springfield, Poco and the Souther-Hillman-Furay band, his hits include “For What It’s Worth,” “Heart of the Night,” “Pickin’ Up the Pieces.” Backed by Poway OnStage favorites the Back to the Garden band, this promises to be the “must see” show of Poway OnStage’s 2022/2023 season.
