Ariana Brown: Taking Care of Black Girls When the World Won't

Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 5:30 PM

Free

Ariana Brown is a queer, Black, Mexican American poet with 13 years of experience writing, performing and teaching poetry. Her work focuses on Black relationality, queer kinship and imagining a world where Black girls are free. She is the author of the poetry collections “We Are Owed” (2021) and “Sana Sana” (2020). She is a 2014 national collegiate poetry slam champion who owes much of her practice to performance communities led by Black women poets from the South.

Drawing on her lived experience and her research, Brown will trace her attempts to recover Black girlhood not just for herself, but for other Black girls too. Combining storytelling, poems and dialogue, this artist talk is an opportunity to hear from Brown about how her identities and politics shape her writing. The event will take place online via Zoom.
