Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”. Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive. Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 2 p.m. on KPBS 2 / No longer available in the PBS App. Charles Perrault's 1698 fairy tale, the classic telling of the Cinderella story, is an excellent source for an opera-providing color, romance, and relatable themes for audiences of all ages. The work includes many moments in which Massenet is at his best and most widely accessible, from the pageantry and glowing musical nostalgia for the French baroque in the court scenes to the otherworldliness of the love music to the wit and humor that permeate the work as a whole.

In collaboration with Pacific Arts Movement (Pac Arts) and the San Diego Asian Film Festival, join us on Free Third Thursday, February 15 for a film screening of "Wisdom Gone Wild" by Rea Tajiri. "Wisdom Gone Wild" is a vibrant and tender cine-poem. Rea Tajiri collaborates with her Nisei mother as they confront the painful curious reality of wisdom ‘gone wild’ in the shadows of dementia. Made over 16 years, the film blends humor and sadness in an encounter between mother and daughter that blooms into an affectionate portrait of love, care, and a relationship transformed.  Refreshments will be available for purchase from The Kitchen.

Spend a delicious evening with Yotam Ottolenghi as he talks about his new book, "COMFORT," in this fun and participatory event. Live on stage, Yotam will take the audience through "COMFORT," (from eggs, to noodles, to roast chicken, to a wide array of cultural and culinary themes) in conversation with his local host, and will invite the audience to participate in a second half as he prepares one of his dishes. Just as food brings people together, this event combines the culinary innovation of Ottolenghi with suggestions and questions from the audience (that’s you!) to create a one-off live experience. About Lori Bell | Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. Bell plays with confidence and taste, with a proclivity toward the more subtle means of emotional expression. Her playing inherently has a many-layered depth that reveals a more meaningful art. She renders ballads with exceptional sensitivity while bringing wonderful nuances to swing and be-bop, which she plays with power, agility and a natural élan. Her phrasing, evocative of birds, shows the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, yet is rendered with such purity of tone and range of timbre that it is clearly of a different ornithology.
