  • From the museum: The special exhibition "Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images" sheds light on the use of color in Korean painting—known as polychrome painting (chaesaekhwa)—and its role in Korean art and culture. Polychrome painting flourished during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) and the colorful artworks created during this era, featuring symbolic images from sacred to secular, permeated all sectors of society. Highlighting contemporary works of art in dialogue with select masterpieces from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the fifty works presented throughout these galleries highlight the continued influence of color and the legacy of auspicious images, long overshadowed by painting created in black ink, and span a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, prints, video, and multi-media installations. Korea in Color invites visitors to encounter the role art once played in everyday Korean life across four themes connected to a traditional household: protection offered by animals at the doorstep; symbols of abundance and longevity in the garden; scholarly objects and books in the study; and the appreciation of majestic mountains beyond the walls of the home. These four sections are organized around core elements of traditional Korean painting: Byeoksa, protection against evil spirits; Gilsang, good fortune; Gyohun, edification; and Gamsang, appreciation, and prompt consideration of how these qualities intersect with life today. Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images is an exhibition of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, in collaboration with Korean Culture and Information Service, Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, and The San Diego Museum of Art. • “If a voice as rich, supple, and vibrant as Missy Andersen’s could come out of a bottle- not that it hasn’t been tried - every blues singer would be dripping deep soul.” –Dave Rubin, Author & Journalist. Missy Andersen and her accompanist/husband, Heine Andersen, love what they do. Keeping a heavy touring schedule, the tenacious twosome perform as a duo which showcases the couple’s individual and combined talents. In the absence of other instruments, listeners find a greater appreciation for Missy’s gospel-tinged vocals and Heine’s Blues & Americana inspired guitar work. A charismatic performer known for her expressive and earthy vocals, Missy Andersen received the coveted "Blues Music Award" nomination for Soul Blues Female Artist in 2015 and then again in 2016. Her sophomore album, "In the Moment," received rave reviews from both critics and fans and ended up on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Albums. Raised in Queens, NY, Missy grew up singing along to the blues, soul, and gospel music of her parents and grandparents. These influences are evident throughout her recordings and live performances. Originally from the country of Denmark, but steeped in American Roots music, Heine Andersen has toured extensively in both Europe and North America, playing some of the most prestigious stages and festivals throughout his career. Noted for his polyrhythmic acoustic style, Heine plays lead and rhythm as well as bass lines simultaneously. With eyes closed, a listener would swear there were at least three musicians present. Add in Missy’s expressive, deep soul vocal delivery plus humorous storytelling and it’s a perfect match of all things good. • Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”. Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive. Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. This unique perspective grants Montgomery both strength and vulnerability in his art practice. For more information visit: sparksgallery.com Stay Connected on Facebook / Instagram
  • Lori Bell makes her debut at Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 147TH Session of Dim Sum & Jazz! Seating begins at 6p.m. and music starts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! About Lori Bell | Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. Bell plays with confidence and taste, with a proclivity toward the more subtle means of emotional expression. Her playing inherently has a many-layered depth that reveals a more meaningful art. She renders ballads with exceptional sensitivity while bringing wonderful nuances to swing and be-bop, which she plays with power, agility and a natural élan. Her phrasing, evocative of birds, shows the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, yet is rendered with such purity of tone and range of timbre that it is clearly of a different ornithology. Lori Bell is a three time Global Music Award recipient recognized for her recordings, compositions, and arrangements. Like Dim Sum & Jazz? Check out the rest of the schedule here!
