Search-and-rescue efforts continued Thursday for five military personnel who went missing this week when a U.S. Navy helicopter crashed into the sea off the coast of San Diego.

The 49 COVID-19 deaths reported in the past week nearly doubled the previous week's 25, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.

Vyvianna Quinonez, who was arrested May 23 at the culmination of the flight from Sacramento to San Diego International Airport, faces felony charges of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and interference with flight crew members and attendants.

A San Diego lawmaker's bill to ensure that only actually recycled plastics count toward the state's recycling goals passed the Assembly Wednesday and now heads to the governor's desk.

The authors noted that from March through June, vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection was estimated to exceed 90%. By July, however, it had fallen to around 65%.

Legislation authored by Sen. Brian W. Jones, R-Santee, to provide personal protective equipment to social workers was unanimously approved by the state Senate Wednesday and sent to the governor.

The announcement comes after a judge struck down San Diego's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, saying only the state can make that a requirement.

Earlier this month, supervisors unanimously voted to oppose any further placements of sexually violent predators until local jurisdictions are able to fully participate in the placement process, including having full veto authority.
