Highlights

  • High school athletics reigns supreme in the Imperial Valley. During the 2024-25 season, two of Central Union High School’s teams took the quest for championships all the way to the CIF State final levels. One repeated, one fell just short.
  • The new school year can be exciting, but also stressful. Kids may be feeling anxious. Parents may be juggling new responsibilities. Experts share tips on how to manage this season of change.
  • It can be tough to navigate relationships when our friends start having kids. This guide can help both parents and child-free folks figure out how to stay connected in a new life stage.

News
  • While overall rates have dropped, there is still a major gap separating white, Hispanic and black teenagers. Non-Hispanic white teen pregnancy rates fell by 50 percent from their peak; Hispanic teen pregnancy rates, 37 percent; black teen pregnancy rates, 48 percent.
  • New federal guidelines say every child should be screened for high cholesterol once between the ages of 9 and 11 and again between 17 and 21. The testing aims to find kids with extremely high cholesterol caused by a genetic condition. But the testing will find others whose cholesterol may not need treatment.
  • A Georgia hospital has launched an advertising campaign that grimly highlights the risks of childhood obesity. The goal of the "Stop Sugarcoating It, Georgia" ads is to shock families into recognizing that obesity is a problem. The ads are making an impact, but the tactics are raising questions.
