KPBS Families Hub

Welcome to KPBS Families Hub. This is the place to find news, information and resources to help you make decisions about the children under your care and support you in your family adventures.

Highlights

  • High school and college students graduating in 2026 will have had access to artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT since their freshman year. Teens are using it in creative ways to help them study, but many have also received little to no guidance on responsible use. In this episode, we discuss how to talk to teens about AI, including its risks and potential benefits for young people.
  • The new school year can be exciting, but also stressful. Kids may be feeling anxious. Parents may be juggling new responsibilities. Experts share tips on how to manage this season of change.
  • It can be tough to navigate relationships when our friends start having kids. This guide can help both parents and child-free folks figure out how to stay connected in a new life stage.

News
  • New federal guidelines say every child should be screened for high cholesterol once between the ages of 9 and 11 and again between 17 and 21. The testing aims to find kids with extremely high cholesterol caused by a genetic condition. But the testing will find others whose cholesterol may not need treatment.
  • A Georgia hospital has launched an advertising campaign that grimly highlights the risks of childhood obesity. The goal of the "Stop Sugarcoating It, Georgia" ads is to shock families into recognizing that obesity is a problem. The ads are making an impact, but the tactics are raising questions.
  • A review has found that eliminating foods from a child's diet is usually not enough to effectively treat attention deficit disorders. Instead, researchers recommend a healthy diet high in protein and low in processed, sugary foods.
