A handful of protesters held a rally outside Congressman Duke Cunningham's Escondido office Wednesday. Protesters were trying to convince Cunningham to vote against a proposed budget they say contains too many cuts in social programs. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The budget plan would cut money for food stamps, Medicaid, and other programs aimed at helping the poor.

Republican leaders in the House argue the budget would reduce the deficit and help the economy grow.

But protester Bill Madaras says there's a better way to shrink the deficit.

Madaras: "Repeal Bush's tax breaks for the wealthy, and a lot of the tax breaks that he's given to corporations."

Republican leaders tried to pass their budget last week, but were rebuffed by members of their own party. A number of GOP moderates sided with Democrats, saying they can't support such large cuts in social spending.

Another vote is scheduled this week.
