The stakes are high as San Diego's new mayor, Jerry Sanders, delivers his first State of the City Address tonight. After two years of financial and legal turmoil, citizens have high hopes the mayor will have answers to questions such as whether bankruptcy is avoidable.

San Diego city council president Scott Peters says the mayor cannot downplay the problems the city faces, but he should also show there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Peters: "The mayor should be frank with us about the challenges that we have we want that from him in an honest way . That said the mayor's gotta give hope. The mayor's gotta explain that we're gonna get out of this funk that's what people elected him and us to do and that's what I also hope to hear from his message."

Among the issues the mayor faces are a massive pension deficit, an uncooperative pension board, mounting infrastrucuture needs and a demoralized city government.
The speech begins at 6 pm tonight at Golden Hall in the civic plaza downtown. KPBS will carry it live.
