The city of San Diego's auditor /controller presented his report to city council Tuesday. The report details errors made by the city's internal auditing department in the past, and concludes a major overhaul is needed. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
This is not the city's long awaited independent audit, but it covers many of the issues that have caused a delay in getting the city's financial accounts approved. Larry Tomanek, assistant auditor and controller, began work at the city last year. He says many of the city's problems can be traced back to the previous auditor.
Tomanek: "A lot of the problems a lot of the errors were auditors department errors over the past years, the water department put in a pipe a line, the sewer department they put in the sewer main, they did their job they put 'em in, the accountants they didn't keep track of it."
The report says the city's authoritarian environment led to quote "a deafening silence" where there should have been open discussion of financial reporting problems. The council will consider adopting better internal controls. Alison St John KPBS news.
