San Diego's Center City Development Corporation held the first in a series of five workshops on redevelopment plans for the Navy Broadway Pier downtown. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The lead architect for the project, Gordon Carrier, showed a conceptual design for the project, now called Pacific Gateway. The waterfront site includes four distinct blocks, with a pedestrian promenade cutting diagonally through them.
A 1.9 acre park lies on the waterfront before a high rise hotel and next to a museum. Carrier made it clear the whole project centers around connecting the navy to the city.
Carrier: "That museum square as a promenade is filled with things like sculpture, things that are artful, respectful complement our desire to have the navy here, to stay here and to celebrate what they've done for us."
A citizens coalition wants more park space on the site, which is a lynch pin between the north and south embarcadero. But the city's development agency said buildings in the plan conform with navy guidelines, and public input can limited to the 1.9 acre park. Alison St John, KPBS news.
