A new report shows children in San Diego County's most heavily Latino communities are more likely to live in poverty and are less prepared to go to college.
The study comes from the advocacy group Children Now. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The report takes a look at a number of measures of children's well being in the County's Latino neighborhoods.

It finds nearly one in four children live in poverty, as compared to one in ten in other communities. The report also reveals a lower percentage of high school graduates in Latino areas meet state college entrance requirements.

Children Now president Ted Lempert.

Lempert: You know, I think people need to focus in on the fact that these kids are our future workforce, they literally are our future here in our state, and that behooves us to improve a number of these indicators, especially when it comes to their education.

The report recommends expanding access for after school and mentoring activities. And it calls for more resources for programs to help boost families out of poverty. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
