A new Wall Street report finds three San Diego schools are making progress closing the achievement gap between rich and poor students as well as minority and white children. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Standard and Poor’s analysts looked at schools around California and picked more than 100 that are closing the achievement gap. Three schools were recognized in the San Diego Unified School District: Dana Elementary and Correia Junior High in Point Loma, and Hickman Elementary in Mira Mesa.
Dana Elementary closed the achievement gaps among black and white students in fifth-grade reading and math. Correia Junior High closed the gap among the same two groups of students in eighth-grade reading and math. And low-income students at Hickman Elementary gained ground in fourth and fifth-grade reading.
San Diego Unified is one of five school districts with at least three schools showing significant improvement. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
