Local Military Families Receive Free Christmas Trees

One thousand free Christmas trees were delivered to Camp Pendleton this morning. Thousands more are arriving at military bases around Southern California and the country – part of the second year of the Trees for Troops program. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Hundreds of Marine families, many with young children, lined up as early as 7 a.m. in a biting cold wind to get a free tree. Tim and Emily Chandler with their two year old Timmy Chandler were the first in line. Emily Chandler says her budget is very limited but - her husband is finally home for the holidays after three deployments in Iraq.

Chandler: It’s been rough. This is a huge Christmas -- it feels like the whole Iraq thing is going to change too so it’s a really happy Christmas.

Marines in purple santa hats helped carry the sweet smelling pines cut in Oregon three days ago and load them up. Trees for Troops will donate 11,000 Christmas trees to 25 bases around the United States and oversees. Alison St John., KPBS News.
