The California Coastal Commission has approved one of two conditions for construction of a desalination plant in Carlsbad. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has this update on the meeting in Oceanside.

More than 200 people showed up to testify on two issues related to a permit for the desalination plant. Poseidon Resources wants to build the largest desalination plant in the country.

The Coastal Commission already approved a  construction permit last year - but with conditions. Those conditions include offsetting greenhouse gas emissions and potential damage to marine life.

After more than six hours of testimony the commissioners voted in favor of allowing the state air resources board to verify Poseidon's plan to offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Poseidon's Scott Maloni says the company got what it wanted.

Now the commission looks at Poseidon's plan to offset potential damage to marine life.

The hearing is expected to continue through early evening.

After ten years the company is closer to building the project which convert seawater into 50 million gallons of water per day.
